So is targeting a knee with a side kick legal in the UFC?

Jon Jones, Till and others have used this brutal and rather simple technique(see Rampage).

Is it actually legal by UFC/unified rules?
 
I heard punches to the face may be illegal as well
 
I don't know, but below is perfectly legal in the unified rules. You just don't see it much these days, sadly.

Yes it’s legal though not exactly honorable. But Jones don’t care even abou legality.

Edit: let’s be accurate here - the oblique kick to the knee, a ‘push’ kick where the weight is coming down on the knee, not from the side, is the really nasty move.

If it lands properly then you will do serious possibly permanently crippling damage.

Don't shower for 2 weeks, grow out your body hair, stomp the feet in the clinch, and sidekick the knee.
 
Yeah you can kick anywhere strike anywhere except the groin, throat and back of the head.
