So I just watched Gran Torino...

Good yellow actors are a needle in a hay stack.

A good young yellow actor is a single grain of rice in China's yearly rice production.

Stupidest comment I've heard.
You haven't watched many non Hollywood movies have you?

Well structured script. Clint is at his best on screen, but good fucking GOD, does his supporting cast ever suck. The main problem with this movie is that the co-lead just can't act. He is fucking atrocious. Embarrassingly terrible. I understand that his first language probably isn't English, but why build the film around him if he can't speak the lines convincingly? He can't emote, he can't speak...why is this flick centered around him? He brings the whole thing down. Scenes that could've worked with a better actor(the barbershop scene), are rendered laughable by this useless hack.

It really bothers me, because there is a solid foundation for a great movie, but it's just ruined by this scene ruining piece of shit. Fuck you, Thao.

5/10.
The "actor" was a kid from a high school in Minnesota, I don't think he had any acting experience before this film (it shows). I would go onto say the film seemed to want to show the bad side of Hmong people in the USA and not the good side. Hmong people are awesome, this film wanted to just show the bad side of the gangster type Hmong. It was not a good representation of Hmong culture rather just a "vehicle" for Clint Eastwood to act like a badass.

Fair enough. Clint did seem to want to portray his character as Rambo Christ, and used the Hmong community as a backdrop to prop the old angry white guy up.

Lol idk man. They complimented the film well. There fob Asian people. That's how they act in real life. I would know

Now that you mention it. Yeah the supporting actors were bad.

Completely agree with you guys. I wanted to turn the movie off when the kid was locked in the basement, that's how bad the acting was. I was actually embarrassed for him.

Yeah, I remember that part in particular. Completely ruined the movie for me from then on out.

Hmm I just watched this movie the other week. Yeah the Asian actors weren't amazing, but I didn't find them so bad to the point that it ruined the movie for me.

@ShayosInvisble
I believe ShayosInvisible was onto something as the movie offered an excuse for Eastwood to run around waving a weapon on a hollywood set as an old, combat veteran. It was a project of personal interest.

By this time Eastwood was also aware of fine Asian acting talent, it came after Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.

They complemented each other. Clint is a terrible actor too, but since everyone watched him with their daddy, you all think he's good because of Nostalgia. dude got embarrassed by his supporting cast in most movies, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Unforgiven etc. still good movies though because i don't expect to be blown away by Clint.

What also helped make the supporting cast in this movie extra bad is the fact that Clint is a lazy fucking director. he wants to stay under budget and and under schedule so he constantly goes with the first take and takes shortcuts with things like the fucking fake baby in American Sniper.

Shows how good some of the actors in his films are though. Mystic River was shot in just over a month or something like that.

But anyway, Death Wish and Harry Brown are better versions of it.

Didnt bother me at all. Brilliant film which also produced one of the best eastwood gifs. 8/10

Spike Lee threatened Clint with a law suit if he didn't actually hire local, Asian actors to be in the film.

haha, not really. but you can imagine the pressure on Eastwood to do just that.

they turned out to be mere cardboard cutouts with no depth or substance. tragic.

Why is it any of Spike's f*cking business who he hires?

And I liked the movie.

This mirrors my thoughts. The movie was well done overall.

Oh, I've got one. A Mexican, a Jew, and a colored guy go into a bar. The bartender looks up and says, "Get the fuck out of here."

Those fucking actors are lucky, they made millions of hmong dollars.

Edit :just checked, a million hmong dollars are like 50 cents
