Well structured script. Clint is at his best on screen, but good fucking GOD, does his supporting cast ever suck. The main problem with this movie is that the co-lead just can't act. He is fucking atrocious. Embarrassingly terrible. I understand that his first language probably isn't English, but why build the film around him if he can't speak the lines convincingly? He can't emote, he can't speak...why is this flick centered around him? He brings the whole thing down. Scenes that could've worked with a better actor(the barbershop scene), are rendered laughable by this useless hack.

It really bothers me, because there is a solid foundation for a great movie, but it's just ruined by this scene ruining piece of shit. Fuck you, Thao.

5/10.

You pretty much nailed it. One of Eastwood's best performances ever. But every time the boy or girl was on screen, it was like a high school student film.

Clint brought it up to a 6/10 for me. But those kids both get an absolute zero. Rousey level.

The crucifix position at the end was cheesy as well.

Completely agree with you guys. I wanted to turn the movie off when the kid was locked in the basement, that's how bad the acting was. I was actually embarrassed for him.

The kid is supposed to act like that...he's an out of place, awkward teenager.

He's an out of place, awkward, shitty actor.

Sorry bro, but there is no excuse for his acting limitations. He's just plain awful

Spike Lee threatened Clint with a law suit if he didn't actually hire local, Asian actors to be in the film.

haha, not really. but you can imagine the pressure on Eastwood to do just that.

they turned out to be mere cardboard cutouts with no depth or substance. tragic.

Clit's rad.

You know a lot of Hmongs who can act? Do you even know one Hmong dude? Do you even know what a Hmong is?

Most of the cast weren't actors, including Thao. Rather odd to put a 16 or 17 year old kid with no acting experience in that big of a role but Eastwood wanted to go with actual Hmong actors.
I didn't think he was that bad but I've only watched the film once, need to rewatch it.

They weren't that great, but they were better than the dudes who played Anakin, both guys.

Does it matter?

If Hmong's can't act, then Hmong's shouldn't be cast.

Tell that to Clint, or tell him to cast Mickey Rooney next time.

You can turn this into a race thing all you want. Reality is, it's an actor thing. If you can't act, you shouldn't be the co-lead actor in a movie. The end.

But I'm racist, because I don't like shitty actors, regardless of their nationality...

Okay bud.

Who's to say that's not great acting from Hmongs? What if that's how Hmongs emote in real life?

They do emote like that in real life....when they're untrained actors in the environment of a Hollywood set, speaking a foreign tongue.

Shitty actors, dude. Nothing you say can change that.

I never noticed how shitty they were to be honest. They were fine for me. They weren't great, but it's hard to be in the same scene with a master like Clint. But if they were ok for Clint, why are you getting so riled up? Who would you have cast?

You want to see bad? See the white extras in Asian tv and films. lol

Good yellow actors are a needle in a hay stack.

A good young yellow actor is a single grain of rice in China's yearly rice production.
In USA maybe, but there are some great Asian actors in Asia. I mean, really great.

"Who would you have cast?"

"Better than you could do!"

These are not valid counter-arguments. They are nothing more than desperate deflections. The acting by the co-lead actor is shitty. I can't change that. It's just shitty. If you can't see it, so be it. It's still shitty.

Not a counter argument. Who would you cast? What would you do in Clint's situation? Productions a tough job and you have to make concessions somewhere.
