So Gane would have basically stood zero chance against Prime Werdum, correct?

IIRC a few short months ago the Sherdog was talking about Gane like he was the next Crocop level striker with iron clad TDD….
<6>
It’s truly amazing how you’re only as good as your last performance, also of note Sherdogs loyalty is to those who win impressively today.
<{cruzshake}>
Sherdog, where todays hero could be tomorrows bum.

Kind of a pointless argument considering their primes were never even remotely close to each other.

Well Werdum was able to out clinch Cain Velasquez and his striking was quietly elite.

Would he win a pure striking match? No but I think it would be close and with the massive grappling advantage I just don't see how Gane can win. Werdum had relentless cardio and despite having weak hands and an elite kicking game.

Werdum beats Gane comfortably

Werdum was never very good at taking people down.

Werdum was significantly better on the ground than Jones. Gane obviously does horribly when taken down. So, my conclusion is that Gane would have basically stood zero chance against Werdum.

Who agrees?
Werdum was very savvy in the submission traps but every fight starts on the feet. Jones made it look easy but that doesn't mean Gane wouldn't KO Werdum before he got his chance.

Fight would go pretty much like Werdum vs Overeem did, with Werdum clowning on the ground to try to call Gane to it...

In essence.. Yes.

But I don’t know if Gane would just dive into Werdum’s guard on the ground while Werdum’s lying on his back waving him in. That would be epically bad fight IQ.

Gane might have been able to hurt him on the feet, and finish that way. Though he’s not really a power puncher. But on the ground he’d be in huge trouble.

In 2 fights with wrestling/grappling Gane’s stock has hit record lows.

And nothing about his attitude makes me think that will change. I guess we’ll see.

He might be able to knock him out if it stays standing but that's a big if.

I don't know, Stipe and JDS were very elite strikers with decent TDD and made easy work of Werdum. Then again Gane doesn't really have the power to put Werdum's lights out. I think Werdum might edge it

Werdum doesn’t have the wrestling of Jones nor is powerful as Francis but if they end up grappling Werdum most likely subs him, despite Werdum inproving his striking I still think Gane is better in that part.

I really hate to say this but HW Jones dominates Werdum with wrestling and makes it look easy

Werdum is a BJJ specialist, not a wrestler. His TDs are not great. He but scoots, for Christ's sake. While he would have the advantage, it wouldn't be complete. I would give Gane maybe a 20% chance.

So? Gane is one of, if not the best striker at HW we’ve ever seen. He would absolutely outclass Werdum on the feet.

And don’t judge his level of fighting by one bad fight. By that logic you could look at Aldo’s career and only look at his 13 second KO and say he’s a bum.

Yes, Gane performed bad against Jones. I think Jones aura overwhelmed him. He has shown in his previous fights he has good submission skills, good TDD and great clinch work.

TBH I would favour him against Werdum. Werdum doesn’t have the wrestling that Jones has, so there’s a good chance they kept it standing and Gane would definitely pick him apart there
Yes his wrestling was on full display against one leg NCAA Francis too.

Eh its not that cut and dry. Werdum's takedowns were always pretty weak. You almost have to have Fedor level fight IQ to get subbed diving into something like a clown. Werdum is never just going to casually walk up and muscle you to the ground like Jones did to Gane.

After last fight I'm picking any grappler vs Gane.

Sergei Spivak should be blowing up the phones for that fight, that's his easiest path into the top 5

Prime Werdum vs HW Jones

Werdum smokes him, right?

It might actually look like Jones vs Gane but this time Werdum is Jones
