Snatch vs Clean

Well the size is more of a fringe benefit to the strength. I know that hypertrophy and power training have different programming needs, but if I had to pick one it'd be the extra strength. I'm pretty confident lifting + extra food will thicken him up so he can bang in the paint, he's not trying to become an offensive tackle after all.

Given the consensus here, I think I'll work in clean + press.

I'm a pretty big nba fan, and in the last several years, the tallest and strongest centers have been doing the best. Dwight Howard, Shaq, etc. It seems that at that position, Size and technique .75> smaller and technique 1.0, but you gotta know how to use your size. I play with friends quite a bit, and play a powerfoward type position. (nothing's official in pickup games) im 5'8" and due to my muscular build, i posted up a 6'1" guy, who has played ball in HS, pretty easily. Make sure he doesnt put on size and play like a teddy bear and just go around guys rather than through, make sure he plays like a grizzly bear and post up.

I'm sure he knows way more about basketball then mysel, i only played in middleschool, but that was just my 2cents that probably wont matter to your bro

He's a mean fucker and will barrel head first into guys with size advantages, I think it's from having a [formerly] much larger brother constantly horsing around with him. lol.

Ha, thats good, back when i played in middleschool, my shot hadnt developed and i could barely make a layup. The coach played me because i averaged around 5+ steals a game and was a good rebounder. I have an older brother, he pissed me off all the time when i was younger, it definately made me tougher. Him being bigger than me is what got me into weightlifting in the first place.

I wish your brother good luck. If you record some of his games, that'd be cool.

I'm going to try to do that. He's in a good spot right now to explode in development between now and the coming season. The roster has been shuffled up so he can be the top candidate for center, and he's playing ball 2+ hrs a day with good opponents and he's lifting weights now.
 
dza, I skimmed this thread so if you already explained this I apologize, but what is your reason for going with a press after the clean as opposed to a jerk or a push press?

I don't know the terminology, as far as I'm concerned I'm going to have him clean to his chest then lock out over head. It'll probably end up as a push-press.

He's 5'11, was a swing man last year (played JV and V) and is going to be a senior. He has no aspirations for post-HS basketball and up here in RI you can play center at <6' in HS and have some success. As for stats, I don't have them I just know he averages what seems like good numbers in points and rebounds.

i wish i went to a school like that. at my school, the PG is 5'11". my brother went to a different HS, and he could play PF at 5'10" Also, since he may play guys who have a good height advantage, i would look into some type of vertical jump training. My sister's bf is 5'11" and he can dunk easily from these shoes he bought that make you stay on your toes, they come with a workout plan. Im not sure what they are called, but just ask on yahoo answers or something, if you havent heard of them, and it should be relatively easy to figure out.

Clean and Jerk? is going to lower the weight and re-hang clean it after every pushpress? i would say that exercise is better for basketball than a power clean or snatch. But why not do all 3 on different days?
 
Both are advantageous.

Assuming you are doing the full versions of both the snatch and clean, the snatch will provide (slightly) more upper back work and does wonderful things for strengthening the external rotators (often a weakness in b-ball players).

The full clean allows more weight to be used. Benefits of this should be obvious.

But really for most b-ball players, I would teach the power versions of each exercise, so I could focus primarily on triple extension over everything else. While this is not critical, it is a personal preference, and the power versions can be learned faster, given that most of the training time should be spent on skill development (playing the actual sport). Proper timing (learning to pull under the bar) takes time and effort to learn, and care must be taken to ensure that this does not compromise recovery ability and inhibit performance of the actual sport.
