They were very common in boxing but the practice stopped long time ago, can't remember when, possibly 20 years. If I recall it's not because they were unfair but were discovered to be harmful. Who'd have thought inhaling chemicals could be bad.

My cousins and I used to sneak up behind one another, fart in our hand, and cup it over their nose and mouth to where you had to hold your breath and fight to break free. Always had to be on alert when we were together. Fun times.

I believe they're banned by athletic commissions In combat sports, as they've been used to revive fighters that have been concussed which can be very dangerous.

Not sure about MMA, but same comissions, same rules I would assume.
