Do the cornermen of UFC fighters use smelling salts? It seems like it would be useful when a fighter is trying to recover.

The UFC corners use a particular brand of smelling salt in between rounds:

Yes. To wake a fighter up when they are out after a fight. I don’t know about in the corners as that seems pretty unfair as in if a fighter gets rocked and almost stopped in round 2, they shouldn’t be able to inhale smelling salts to aid the recovery in my opinion.

You never see or hear about them using it. If they were Rogan would have had several podcasts about it.

I believe they're banned by athletic commissions In combat sports, as they've been used to revive fighters that have been concussed which can be very dangerous.

Not sure about MMA, but same comissions, same rules I would assume.

I bet they've tried to sneak It in though.

smelling salts are amazing

Stop looking for things to put in your nose Jones

this thread made me interested in what smelling salts actually are. So here, for anyone interested:

"Smelling salts aren’t what most people think of as “salt”; there isn’t sodium in smelling salts. The main and most active ingredient is ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3H2O), a solid chemical compound that, when mixed with water (H2O), releases ammonia gas. Ammonium carbonate also goes by “baker’s ammonia,” due to the fact that it was used as a leavening agent prior to the popularity of baking soda or powder in the early to mid-19th century. In fact, baker’s ammonia is still used in a few traditional Scandinavian Christmas time recipes like Speculoos (spiced shortbread biscuit) and Lebkuchen (similar to a gingerbread cookie). Often, another main ingredient in smelling salts is some component that masks the terrible smell of ammonia gas, usually perfume or, even, flowers."

So, I guess, check if ammonium carbonate or ammonia gas are on the banned substance list and you'll have your answer, TS.

Rogan had never actually heard of smelling salts up until the ben greenfield podcast.

guess a lot of people aren't really aware

I would imagine they've tried to get away with using them though. Or at least pre fight.
