I got caught in a pretty nasty omaplata last Thursday, thought I could roll out of it but ended up just tapping way later than I should have. I pretty much have full range of motion and theres no clicking or anything. But when I move my arm in a similar direction to how the omaplata does, or shrug, I get pretty intense pain through my shoulder and collarbone.

Does anyone know more details about how or what an omaplata could of injured? Or whay type of doctor I should see, if I need to....

Take it easy for atleast a week and give your shoulder some time to heal on it's own.

After a week if it isn't getting better than I would go to the doctor. I find the hardest part about BJJ injuries is taking time off the mat to let injuries heal.

There are a lot of muscles that make up the shoulder girdle so it is hard to pin point what you injury is. Take some time to ice the shoulder and let it heal. It's better to take time off and let it heal opposed to getting back on the mats with an injury and injuring it more.

DC Training Shoulder Stretch - YouTube (this isn't me)

I do this stretch, but instead of a brook stick I use my BJJ belt. I shoot for 50 reps. Grasp as close as you can and go front to back from your thighs, over your head, to the lower back. I had some shoulder issues, went to the doctor, had an MRI, and there wasn't anything they can repair. However my should was f'ed up. I started doing this and it was like a miracle. Stretched my rotator cuff muscles, strengthened, and made a huge difference.

Can you put your arm behind your back and put your thumb in the "thumbs up" position? From there try to raise your thumb towards your shoulder very slowly. Is there pain in your shoulder with this exercise? Also put your arms by your sides and do the "thumbs down" position and raise both arms out straight to the sides with your thumbs pointing towards the ground. Do both arms go up the same height or is there a ton of pain preventing you from raising your arm at all?

If so, it could be a rotator cuff tear. I messed my shoulder up about a year and a half ago and went to an Orthopedic who had me try these tests. He was convinced it was a rotator cuff tear which would need surgery. He ordered an MRI in which he noticed I had actually fractured my shoulder. It healed without surgery but take about 4-5 months to fully heal. I got the OK to train but it was difficult for sure.

Ice and rest are a great idea. I know it's tough to stay off the mats but in the long run it will prob. be best for you.

Good luck,
Pete
