didnt matrix 1 end with him flying?
it was saying "sequel coming"
then i dont recall him flying in any sequels...

Ultimately Reloaded and Revolutions fell apart story wise but let me just say visually speaking those movies were incredible. The one thing they did manage to do better than the original was the world building aspect. Aesthetically Reloaded was amazing

Yeah they were OK at the time, but they certainly didn't hold up well at all. Just rewatched the trilogy the other week and you could tell when the characters were CGI and fighting other CGI characters.

Also, this whole Neo being able to connect with the machines in the real world was fucking stupid and made no sense. I could understand the idea of Agent Smith taking over someone's mind while they were connected, but Neo was able to see energy while blinded and mentally connect with the machines. They made some vague attempt at explaining this, but it was bullshit and made no sense. Neo may have been designed to be the One inside the Matrix, but he is still a human regardless. It's not like he has a Bluetooth transmitter in his head or something that explains the connection. He's just a dude.

Dude he flew around all the time in the sequels. They even made comments about it.

They should have made the 2nd and 3rd better.

Keanu is so fat and puffy now I hear he's going to have to be called Feo from here on out.

Third one was much better tho

Second one was just filler, and interesting fight scnes with booooring everything else. Long talks on a bench etc

Yeah story progression-wise - like 10 minutes of content there which they could have just started off the third movie with and skip the middle

It's like the Last Jedi of Matrix movies, nothing really happens and all the characters are in the same place at the end
Last Jedi is way worse with its SJW and destruction of the SW history

I say take all 3 and cut everything that is not Matrix action, Neo and Agent Amith related and u have a badass film!

I watch all of them and skip 95% of the non Matrix stuff, the stupid human drama, except the end where he confronts the AI I watch that.

The worst offense filmmakers do is "explain the magic" when they don't have to
A film, or film series, can be a self contained narrative with a satisfying conclusion without explaining every facet of the world and filling every hole.

This is why most of finished anime/manga are still discussed because they ended without solid conclusions. Except Ashita no Joe, of course.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't think the sequels were unnecessary at all. I just think they were poorly executed. I actually liked the 2nd movie a lot at the time. Let's be honest it's hard to top The Matrix. That movie is one of the best ever made. I will admit the 3rd one was disappointing, and I have no interest in a 4th one at the moment.

In hindsight- yes. But that's hindsight.

Matrix Reloaded was an entertaining film at the time but really does not register much of an impact for me. I could go the remainder of my life (hopefully a long time) without ever watching that again and I would not feel I had missed out.

Revolutions is poor.

To me, The Matrix represents an awesome achievement on its own terms. It's a clever story well told, with terrific visuals and memorable action setpieces, notable characters, and good performances from actors who fit their roles well. Not to mention, the ending of the film strikes the perfect chord. Neo has basically embraced his role as The One and, with his newly honed powers, sends a warning to the Agents and co. that he is going to destroy the illusion and show humanity the truth. He hangs up the phone, looks up to the sky, Rage Against the Machine awesomeness plays, and he flies!

Awesome!

Epic film. Beginning, middle, and end. Done.

Sequels are okay for a watch but nonessential.

Reminds me of how Terminator and T2 did such a good job that everyone thought- let's revisit this world. We saw how that went. Sometimes, an awesome film that has unfolded over 2 hours and told a coherent story is enough.

I can't think of any movie that was very successful that hasn't been milked for every drop they could get out of it...

Seems like in recent years it's only gotten worse.

There was I think a lot of stuff in the sequels in terms of fun pulpy ideas that could have been put to better simpler use. I spose the other main weakness is Zion, its just a fundamentally dull place not the interesting mysterious exotic place most imagined.

Dull? You know how many times the squid robots had to knock on the door and ask them to turn the music down during their rave parties every Friday?

Without question, yes. But the 2nd one had some cool scenes in it.

any really good movie should be a stand alone.
no sequels, prequels, offshoots, revisits, etc.

it's fucking GreedyWood that milks the shit out these things.
from what I've read though, they have to minimize loss due to sometimes
massive outlay.
hence the reboots ad nauseum.

Never saw either of the sequels. Not planning to, either.

In retrospect, sure.
But it's hard for people to turn down a potential money grabbing sequel or two or three. And there have been movies with successful sequels, so there was that.

No, but it's easy to see why most feel that way after what we got with the 2nd and 3rd installments.

The reboot is the worst idea I've heard since...the Charlie's Angels reboot. I guess they figure at this point they don't really have anything left to lose. The franchise's reputation is dead. So you can't kill the patient. They're like the doctor in The Princess Bride.
