The funny thing is Hurricane Sandy wasn't a particularly powerful storm. It was, in essence, a "shitty hurricane". As far as no power, that's what generators are for.

Charlie came in as a 1, hit the gulf stream and completely blew up into a 4 in a very, very short period of time. Everyone who stayed was expecting to ride out a 1 or 2.
They made a big boy bet, won a big boy prize.
If you're on a barrier island or coastal area, you have to leave for any of them, unless you like being neck deep in the ocean during a hurricane. My mom lives in a coastal part of FL. She leaves when they come in. The people who ride them out near the ocean are Darwin Award Nominees.
No different than when Katrina came in, the herp-derpin on TV from people in Pass Christian and Bay St Louis about how "mammy and pappy rode out Camille in 69 in this here house and-a we ain't goin no-whar... "

When my wife and I booked a trip to Thailand in October last year, people were like "you gotta be careful, that region of the world gets hits with tsunamis regularly" and guess what happens? On my way back I find that NYC was hit by Hurricane Sandy flooding all of Wall Street and JFK airport was shut down, leaving me stranded in Dubai for 3 days.
