Should gloves at HW get increased padding?

So I was thinking about the current HW shitshow, and how poor/unsatisfying a lot of the fights are. Wanted to see if the problem is this current crop, or a deeper issue. I think its a deeper issue.

Most exciting HW period of all time was the 60s-70s in boxing, but if you look closer, those HWs were then the equivalent in terms of size of what we today would consider LHWs, aka the Jon Jones/Rumble division. The reality is, that modern HWs are almost too big and powerful. Unless you have an insane chin, it forces you to fight really cautious. This leads to fights where people are too afraid to commit/take risks, and also TOO many flash KOs, to the point where almost anyone gets knocked out at any time. This doesn't feel satisfying, its too much of a crapshoot. Harder to tell who the best fighters are.

So solution? Maybe increase padding for gloves. Similar to boxing or amateur gloves perhaps. Anything to lower the power, and allow for actual fights to take place again.

Heavier gloves = greater risk of brain damage. So I hear.

i've been hit by boxing glovers, MMA gloves and bare fists and i can tell you it all feels about the same

the padding isn't enough to decrease power but it is enough to protect a wrapped hand

So I guess every boxer is braindead? Not sure if serious...

Sex without condom = greater risk of AIDS

TS replies: "So I guess everyone who has sex with a condom has AIDS?"

Logic fail

I love when topics get threaded on first post.

Padding on gloves can reduce certain kinds of injuries, such as cuts and bruising, by spreading the force of the blow over a larger area, but it doesn't reduce a strike's knockout power, which is a function of the sudden acceleration of the head upon impact. In fact, by protecting the hand, padded gloves actually allow harder strikes to be thrown and lead to more knockouts. That's a big part of why so many old bare-knuckle boxing matches went on forever.

Gloves are to protect your hands.
Yes, at least mma gloves for sure. I haven't read about big vs small gloves in terms of brain damage (i feel it's very possible it's out there though).
That said, heres a link to an article(very reputable news source) about AIBA (boxing org, "run" high level amateur stuff like the olympics for example) stopping the use of headgear... Because of adverse results in the brain trauma department. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-boxing-wu-idUSKCN0IW0N620141112
I can't say with certainty it also means "bigger gloves= bad for brain", but doesn't it seem reasonable to assume?

Look up how many boxers die a year vs MMA. Let me know what you find out.
MMA is considerably smaller than boxing, and has been around for less time.

Besides, it still doesn't change the fundamental difference between the sport, in a 3 round vs 12 round fight. In boxing, if you are less skilled you just get pummelled for 12 rounds, in mma it doesn't last that long and usually getting destroyed on the feet leads you to take it to the ground, not an option in boxing. I don't buy that this makes mma more dangerous. Gotta show me proof bro. Just pointing to boxers getting brain damage doesn't cut it.

Don't you feel there's a contradiction? In essence, padding should allow to incrementally increase the force of the contact of the blow... Also, therefore it will transfer the same amount of energy in a longer time (power is energy/time by definition, so power=for sure decreased)
And acceleration- same logic applies, acceleration should decrease.
It is very possible though, that these incremental changes (which occur for sure) are not big enough to be relevant. It is quite possible, that it (bigger gloves or padding) allows fighters to absorb more shots- a cumulative effect if you will.
Other than my highlighted little contradiction though, i agree 100% and you were absolutely spot on.

More padding would only increase the overall damage ensued. Lose the gloves, fight smarter not harder.

Had to sit and think about what you said for a bit. It should actually be

Sex without condom = greater risk of AIDS

Think about it. Heavier gloves protect your hands from getting busted up, enabling you to throw heavier, repeated punches. Somethings gotta give.
