It is. Willie Pep once won a round without even throwing a punch. Just on defense alone.

That's a fairytale. If you disagree provide any evidence it happened. Any footage. Pep was great but I agree with this article that Saddler has been somewhat overlooked. I heard that Pep story as a kid and believed it. Having watched boxing for the past 30 years i tend to see through the absolute bullshit. Yes Bob Arum.

Yes it is. Actually you have no idea what you’re talking about.

"Rule 3.31 says Points will be awarded:

  • For “attack” – direct clean hits with the knuckle part of the glove of either hand to any part of the front or side of the head or body above the belt.
  • The “belt” is defined as an imaginary line drawn across the body from the top of the hip bones.
  • For “defence” – guarding, slipping, ducking or getting away from an attack. Where contestants are otherwise equal the majority of points will be given to the one who does most leading off or displays the better style."

No....Matt Riddle would be undefeated if that was the case
I remember watching that fight when it happened and being terrified the idiot judges would give it to Riddle based on aggression.

Here it says that he likely won without landing a punch not throwing a punch.

No, only offensive maneuvers score in MMA it has always been that way. The purpose of defense is to reduce how much the other person is scoring with their offense. Defense does not score in MMA and never should.

yes it should and it was originally part of the scoring criteria, I don't know why they removed it.

It makes no sense to score defense. Defense reduces how much the other person scores. Only offense scores in MMA.

yeah only if you shuck a mf off you. or fuck them up upon engagement ya know

if you make your opponent miss on strikes and stuff their takedowns that is winning a fight as well, wearing out your opponent is also a way to win. MMA fights are mostly short but you see the effect a lot more in 5 round fights.

You aren't scoring fights correctly if you are scoring defense. Defense doesn't score, it just reduces how much the other person scores. Wearing out an opponent doesn't score either, it just sets up a situation that would allow you to have more offense because they are tired but if they are tired and then you don't do anything to take advantage of them being tired you don't score.

I think so. Stuffed take downs should mean something.

It does mean something it's just not scored cause it's not offense. Stuffing a takedown prevents your opponent from getting a takedown which would otherwise score more.

If you scored defense you could have a fight in theory where neither fighter ever lands a strike but one fighter defends a bunch of takedowns and constantly has their back to the cage in the clinch and you would score that fight for the guy that had zero offense, that doesn't make any sense.

Defense needs a lot more weight. Stuffing 13 takedowns is more impressive than them landing 1 with 3 seconds left trying to 'steal the round'.
I agree I feel like defensive grappling should definitely be scored. Escaping submissions, getting sweeps and reversals

Escaping submissions doesn't score, it reduces how much your opponent scores for his submission attempt, the quicker you escape the less his sub attempt scores. The only thing you mentioned that does score is reversals which sweeps are. The reason reversals score is because you are doing an offensive action.
