He was asked about that once at a press conference. He said it was "a nervous tic". Seems not completely dialed in when he does that, but what do I know.

Early on it was every couple of seconds, but by the final round, he seemed to be doing a lot less of it. You might be right that the more in the zone he is, the less he grabs his shorts.
