A buddy of mine worked with him years ago. He expected Shia to be a total douche bag but said he seemed to have a decent heart. The two main takeaways were that Shia was really out there, I mean like on Pluto weird as fuck, and that if he was drinking you wanted to be close enough to see and hear, but not close enough to get mixed up in his antics.
