Sherdog PC Build/Buy Thread, v5: Stop Thinking of Your Router as a Peripheral

Got this cheap ass keyboard (£20/$29) but it's worth it just for the aesthetics. Build is solid thanks to the weighty metal frame. Keys are membrane but then again, I'm coming off a laptop I've been using since 2011. So you can imagine the grand feeling of switching to an actual sized keyboard. Also has RGB colours to change the scheme of the whole thing.

Really considered the Corsair RGB keyboards BUT realised I only game with controllers (X console player) so this made sense. Same for my mouse which is a regular Logitech MX Anywhere Mouse and not a Corsair blablabla. BUT I did grab the Corsair Anti Fray Mat which cost me more than the keyboard!!!

That's sick! same case as mine too! Was wondering why he left the Caddy trays in still? Unfinished?
Yea. Unfortunately we had to use a new chassis and take this apart. It runs great however the customer wanted a 4 port network card that didn't fit.

Can I ask you a question regarding wiring in the PC? I want something that can cover a load of wires, like all the ones from my PSU at the bottom with say like a metal shell or something, is it possible to buy something like that?

Like even a 90 degree piece of metal that could fit universally on PC screwholes, etc.

Is $300 a good price for a used EVGA Geforce 980?

Well you aren't going to get anything better at that price, though I think the 1070 coming out soon is supposed to be $370 and I'm sure it's going to be quite a bit better, if not in pure FPS then in stability and the other technology that comes with the new series. But as for today, nothing is going to beat that deal, 980 is a great card

Alright guys I need some help.

I've been upgrading my cheap rig and am now looking to get a new processor and MOB. Just so you know I have already installed a new PSU *Corsair cx750M* and GPU *EVGA Geforce GTX 960*. My current MOB *Gigabyte GA-78LMT* and processor *AMD FX-4130* dont really take advantage of my new GPU, So I want to upgrade. I'm on a certain budget so I cant go all out on a new processor and MOB, But all I want is just a good gaming rig. Gaming and surfing the web....that's it for me. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about all these parts, so I'm hoping the sherbro's can help me out.

Im thinking of getting an Asus Z170-A and Intel i5-6600K. Good purchases or can you guys recommend something better for around the same price? From everything I read online, I don't really need an i7 if all I'm gonna be doing is gaming. Would you guys recommend I get a water cooler for the i5? Or is that something that is really only necessary for an i7? Also is it a difficult process switching from an AMD to Intel processor? Any complications?

Thanks for any help and advice. If you want anymore info, just let me know.

Yeah that is great combo and water coolers are great to but not necessary on a tight budget but it does make your of a lot more quiet. When you switch your mobo out though you'll have to wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows so be ready for that

It's not bad but you could find a used 980ti for $50-80 more on ebay and believe you me, the difference is noticeable. I can tell you having owned a pair of each. You also want the extra 2GB of VRAM since recent games are memory hogs.

The 980 is good but the 980ti is a really sold card. It's good enough that I have no reason to upgrade my pair to the 1080s and I game at 4K where every drop of performance matters. The 980ti will hold its own against the 1070/1080 cards until the 1080ti debuts in 6-9 months. Then it's on!

How do I go about doing this? Do I have to wipe my hard drive before I install the new mobo and cpu? Or does it automatically do that when I reinstall Windows on the new mobo and cpu?

This is the part that is confusing and scaring me the most

I'd wipe your hard drive clean and start from scratch.
Install your new mobo and cpu, hook everything up like normal. Then follow the instructions here:

This is not necessarily true. As an experiment, when I did my new build last year I moved my C: drive from my previous computer into the new build and it booted up without any issues. Windows "detected new hardware" and installed drivers on the fly. Everything worked perfectly. I even went from AMD to Intel. That being said, there is nothing like a clean install, but it isn't necessary.

Hory Shet! The 10 Core (20 Threads) has arrived.

6950X for $1,600

But the good news for X99 users? The Broadwell E-Processors work with X99!!! xD

That's quite a margin lol. Still, for normal users, utterly overkill.

Looks sexy (both your rig and keyboard), but if it doesn't have that satisfying click of mechanical keys, I can't type on it.

Strangely, for gaming, I could care less what keyboard I use, but for work, a mechanical keyboard is a must - It is one of the reasons I sold my Surface 3, the typecover never felt comfortable.

That's what surprised me though, it has a good 'click' feel to it even though it's not mechanical. I'll most likely just sell it by the end of the year and just grab a Corsair keyboard though, same goes for my Logitech MX Mouse.

Here's my do buy list of what I have to get to finish this hella dragged on build:

- GPU (Waiting it out for the 1080 Ti, will not upgrade for atleast 2, maybe 3 years.

- Chair I still don't have a chair, I am looking at the DX Racer brand but I know it looks cheap, but have found a new brand, noble chairs offering PU leather also but looks much more professional and solid, and not like I'm sitting in a Type-R.

- Monitor currently have the BenQ 27" XL2720z, probably the best 1080p 144hz, I want to go G-Sync and get a 1440p now since by the time I get a 1080ti, 1080p would be stupid to use even though I've never gamed higger than 1080p ever.

3 Things and I will quit online shopping for a long time. Mission will be accomplished. I began this project in July 2014.:(

Those are all solid choices, but the thought of spending $800 on a 1080TI makes me balk. The sweet spot (for me) is $500.

P.S: If you are interested in high end chairs on a budget, search your local kijiji/craigslist for off lease equipment. I purchased a Steelcase Leap v2 (a $699 chair) for $150. I also picked up a Herman Miller Aeron for my office for $250. If you are not averse to going second hand, you can save hundreds of dollars.

That's my major issue, I have no choice but to pay more in these things, I live in the UK, in the city of London. I should invest my time in studying or doing some design work but I am in my 'getting by' mode. No major downs this year so far, thank God. lol Thanks for the tip though, you just reminded me about the HM chairs, they're expensive beasts. And it's funny actually, I got my desk, an IKEA Galant second hand from a liquidated company, paid less than half and it's condition is 9.5/10

Really? That's good to know though, I remember swapping out parts on my Windows 7 and I got bluescreened, had to wipe it, no mobo swap, it was just a CPU swap, AMD Triple Core (I know lol)

There a some PC cases that have a shroud separating the power supply area and the rest of the case. The NZXT S340 and NZXT H440 are two I can think of. I have the S340, great case.

Did it work fine or did you notice some issues? Is this a Windows 10 thing?
