SHERDOG MOVIE CLUB: Week 87 Discussion - Detention

I just read it was canceled after S2 and that the ratings were pretty low. That kind of surprises me. It seems like a show that would gain a following, especially among girls in their teens and early 20s.

Well, as a proud supporter of season 1 I don't recommend season 2. Too much of the same shit done again but not better, or even as good. Unlike S2 of Stranger Things where it was more of the same but still new enough and well-executed.

I don't think my dude Christian Slater gets the love he deserves from the late 80s to mid 90s

Heathers
Gleaming the Cube
Pump up the Volume
Wizard (he was the older brother)
Very Bad Things
shit even Broken Arrow wasn't that bad (john woo, respect)
True Romance
that one Mobsters movie

and he's just an afterthought now....damn shame

I specifically remember being surprised when he started fading away after Broken Arrow. To me, he was one of the world's biggest movie stars--and for a little while he really was pretty big--so when he stopped getting big roles I was like, "WTF?! This is Christian fucking Slater!"

He seems to have made a minor comeback though and that's nice. Mr. Robot has proven to be a very popular show and he's also appearing in Emilio Estevez's new movie The Public, which looks interesting.

not sure what my favorite Stephen Bauer role is

Many would say Scarface, I say Gleaming the Cube or Primal Fear

thoughts?

I admit I had to look him up to know who you were talking about. He's been in a ton of shit that I haven't seen, but of the films I have I would have to concur with the people who say Scarface.

So a good single-season show then. . .

That's just my opinion. It getting cancelled sounds like others agree though.:D

S2 isn't horrible and I watched the entirety of it. I guess I wouldn't say not to watch it either if you totally dig S1. It's still got good stuff in it. But it's a clear step down.

I liked him pretty good in Ray Donovan.

Probably after one season I'll have had enough anyway.

Have you watched Stranger Things? Haven't seen anything lately capture the '80's vibe like that show does.

Yeah, of course.

I'd probably agree that it's the best thing we got right now that really captures that 80s vibe. I thought S2 did an even better job of this than S1.

BTW, if you haven't watched it, you might want to check out Beyond Stranger Things on Netflix. You'll learn a lot of cool behind-the-scenes stuff.

Thanks. Might give it a watch.

Recently found out my buddy is working with the dudes who do the score. They've got a band called Survive. My friend said they didn't even know the guys were involved with Stranger Things when the record went into production. Said he found out and immediately upped the pressing quantities. lol

That's pretty cool. I really do envy people who are in some way able to derive their living from the industry.

Holy shit @MusterX, look what I just found at my local indie theater. . .

That's a good movie. One of my favorite I've watched with the SMC. We've watched 80 something movies, Victoria probably makes my top 10.

I thought hard about going to see it. Probably should have.

These days they have theaters where you can go and drink beer, something my youth didn't really have. That movie would be great at a midnight showing in a theater that sells food and booze.

Don't remember this one I may have been on hiatus. I'll check it out.

@Scott Parker 27, well did you finish it or what?
I did finish it. Overall it was a really fun movie, albeit a bizarre ride. I enjoyed the fact that it was so original that I have never seen anything like it, and was trying to tell a buddy about it but had no reference except for possibly Scott pilgrim. I'm not sure what the point of the movie was or what I was supposed to learn from the movie except for the fact that I'm old now and the era when I was going to highschool is now looked upon as interesting subject matter, even to goof on. Overall I was thoroughly entertained and enjoyed the football coach and the jock that was a bully.
