The discussion thread for this movie will go up on Wednesday the 6th!

@mb23100 employed a unique tactic this week: Pick five movies that he hasn't seen. These all come from AFI's Top 10 Westerns list and, I confess, I haven't seen any of them either. It should be a good time. Giddy-up!

Here are our candidates!

The Searchers (1956)

Director: John Ford

Stars: John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles

Premise: A Civil War veteran embarks on a journey to rescue his niece from an Indian tribe.

Trailer:

High Noon (1952)

Director: Fred Zinnemann

Stars: Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Thomas Mitchell

Premise: A marshall, personally compelled to face a returning deadly enemy, finds that his own town refuses to help him.

Trailer:

Shane (1953)

Director: George Stevens
Stars: Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin

Premise: A weary gunfighter attempts to settle down with a homestead family, but a smoldering settler/rancher conflict forces him to act.

Trailer:

Red River (1948)

Director: Howard Hawks, Arthur Rosson

Stars: John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Joanne Dru

Premise: Dunson leads a cattle drive, the culmination of over 14 years of work, to its destination in Missouri. But his tyrannical behavior along the way causes a mutiny, led by his adopted son.

Trailer:

Cat Ballou (1965)

Director: Elliot Silverstein
Stars: Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin, Michael Callan

Premise: A woman seeking revenge for her murdered father hires a famous gunman, but he's very different from what she expects.

Trailer:

I do love me some classic westerns. I also like that mb23100 went out of his way to find five movies he hadn't seen before, that's the kind of thing I feel the SMC is all about. I thought about doing the same thing when I'm up to bat.

It's an interesting approach. I typically feel like the club is about sharing something that's important to you with others, but this also is a valid way to go.

I could go both ways on that. Phrasing.

It's going to be a difficult time putting together my list of movies when the time comes, but until, let's talk westerns.

All five of these westerns are on AFI's (american film institute, not the horrid band) top ten westerns list. All good choices. All great westerns.

And I see now that you said that AFI bit in your initial post, but like me just now, not everyone appears to read every word of it apparently so don't feel bad. My bad yo.

LOL. It's all good.

Giddily go-bumpers of the Holy hammock riders of Alexandria!!!! One of my all time favorite films is on that list!

Definitively a classy, eminent list of movies there. Seen all but one so I know which to vote for.

I haven't seen or heard of any of these... I love spaghetti westerns but I haven't watched many American westerns. Lonesome Dove was really good, and I loved Tombstone as a teenager.

I'm torn, Jane Fonda was smoking at that age, so I'm tempted to pick Cat Ballou, but it looks pretty cheesy. The scenery in "Shane" looks amazing, but the story doesn't seem like anything special... Maybe they're saving the surprises for the movie.

The trailer for "The Searchers" seems to give away a lot, but that seems like the one that's more up my alley...

hmmm....

Interesting. I'm surprised you haven't at least heard of The Searchers and Shane.

Which one?

I'm respecting jeicex's no-lobbying rule so fucking hard right now!

3 of the films I've seen are absolute gold-mines for discussion and the 4th isnt bad either. So we're looking at some meaty typing the following weekened.

Guess I'll vote Shane just to see what the fuss about the ending was/is

The only film from the list I've seen is The Searchers, which I thought was pretty disappointing
