Sherdog fighter profiles and flag image/country/city name displayed

On sherdog fighter profiles, which I think are the best in the business, it displays a flag icon of a certain country, and writes a country and city name, in the upper right-hand corner.

For Izzy Adesanya it writes "Nigeria | Lagos" and has a flag of Nigeria. https://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Israel-Adesanya-56374

For Kamaru Usman it says "United States | Delray Beach, Florida" and has the USA flag. https://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Kamaru-Usman-120691

So I just wonder what this flag and country/city name refers to, because there is no "field" given, it just has a flag, and a country and a city name.

Seems like there is a lot of inconsistency. Izzy was born in Nigeria but generally is considered a Kiwi, Ngannou was born in Cameroon, lived in France for some time, and now lives in the USA. Chimaev was born in Chechnya, Russia, lived in Sweden and now I take it lives in the UAE. Usman was born in Nigeria, now lives in the USA.

SD Fight Finder policy has long-since been the following for the Location (city/state/country) of competitors: We default to their birthplace. If a fighter/their team/the major promotion they fight for asks for a change, we gladly change it. In the case of Ngannou and Chimaev, their teams reached out to update them to Paris and Dubai, respectively. As for Usman, it's been Delray Beach since his profile was created in December 2012. For the sake of consistency, I have updated Kamaru to his birthplace, and if that needs to change again, so be it.

Note: the flags automatically match the country we have entered.

Is Francis name really Francis ? Dude walked to France from the Sahara and his name is Francis. Sometimes boxers in Germany take on stage names. Like Felix Sturm, Marko Hook and Artur Abraham.

Thanks for the reply. Part of the reason I wondered was because I was looking up some fighter stats of some fighters in Australia from smaller events, and you get a lot of Pacific Islanders living in Aus who are active in MMA, who sometimes were born in Aus, sometimes not.

Sherdog has them listed from Samoa and NZ, but Tapology says they were both born in Australia (and they do not have enough big fights to have a wikipedia page).

So Francis and Izzy are dual citizens I googled it. I'm certain Khamzat is a UAE citizen now.

Francis is French and Cameroon citizen.

Unrelated I am a Croatian and Bosnian citizen with my birthplace officially being Germany.

Fun fact Germany is a 10-12 hour drive from Bosnia. And it takes me personaly 10-15 minutes to drive from Bosnia to Croatia. The flight from Germany to Croatia or Bosnian is 1:40 hours minutes. In case someone asks why I'm not German than. Cause unlike America you don't have to be the citizenship where you were born.


African French are actually common. Especially Algerians.

My tapology record and my sherdog record, don't even match and neither are correct. I'm ranked on tapology in a weight class I've never even fought in and still ranked (toward the bottom) but haven't fought since 2023 and had retired initially in 2018 from the sport when I was 40. Couple guys ranked under me have recent wins, I lost my last fight in 2023.

he actually said he made a mili in kickboxing in China. So grateful he put up their flag. It´s just a flag anyways. Different from literaly claiming a nationality. He is Nigerian. He is also from Australia later in life and now. He´s a Nigerian man. Lives down under. All of us living in Germany with roots from elsewhere just always call ourselves whatever we are. It´s not a diss to the country where you live at, but unlike America the rest of planet earth isn´t some Euro Mix. Like we all are 1 clearly defined ancestry from all our grandparents and great grandparents dating +1000 years ago. He´s just Nigerian and moved to Australia.
