Sherbytes: Industry News Megathread, v.1

Bringing this topic over from a roundtable we were having in the PS Megathread. Benji summing up what can only be called Ubi bleeding:

It's what happens when you don't have any new ideas and coast on Rainbow Six Siege for so long. Then realize you need new games and toss out crap ideas like XDefiant.

Also Skull & Bones is approaching Duke Nukem Forever levels of bad project management. I was surprised they didn't cancel it last year.

Did you get a chance to try Xdefiant? It looked decent from what I saw and I even got into the closed beta but never actually tried it.

Nah, didn't really interest me. It just seemed like a decent idea 3 years too late. And a misuse of the Tom Clancy trademark they paid so much money for years ago.

I think they got rid of the Tom Clancy name. With how much they paid I'm not surprised they try to throw it on everything they can. The only reason it interested me is because the gunplay seemed like a straight copy of Rainbow six siege and I really like the gunplay in those games.

Yeah after the backlash. It's just a game that screams of out of touch corporate folks being like "this is the shit kids think is cool." Just uninspired art. Then again Need for Speed apparently did alright with that kind of art style. I do agree on the mechanics of Rainbow Six Siege being top notch.

And yeah, they've neglected Splinter Cell and now find themselves scrambling to crap out a remaster instead of something new. Just a shame. Clearly there is a market for stealth since Assassin's Creed is one of their core franchises, but they've been lazy as a company. They can't think beyond live service and the industry has been tough on mid-sized titles.

Out-of-touch corporate hits the nail on the head. Leadership in follow-up say this now and these words sound more a eulogy than inspiration. Unbelievable:

How to create a toxic and unmotivated workforce with a single sentence. This is 100% leaderships fault. They’re the decision makers who hire the managers to manage the workforce. It’s systemic from the top down. Sounds to me, as a co-founder, he should drop his ego and retire.

I expect Ubisoft to be purchased soon. They might wait to see if they fall even more though. I doubt Sony or MS make a move though they are to busy with the Activision deal.

Embracer or Tencent would seem to be the most obvious choices. Assuming it's not a private equity buyer, that would be a blood bath and even worse shitshow

Tencent already own 9.99% of Ubi plus 50% of the Directors parent company (who own 10.1% of Ubisoft), wouldn't be surprised if they're gearing up for acquring more shares this year

Yup. I think the major curveball with that is the EU has been making noises about wanting to invest in European video game companies and ensure Europe is at the helm of the industry, yada yada. Plus any acquisition of that size with a Chinese corporation will always be iffy these days.

Following on from this, the French Trade Union is called on the Ubisoft Paris workers to strike following the CEO's email

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/202...ris-workers-to-strike-following-ceos-comments

Solidaires Informatique maintains that Guillemot is attempting to shift the blame for the company's troubles and his own failures onto employees. They anticipate that measures such as increased managerial pressure and overtime will be implemented to get things back on track.

They note that while the ball may be in the employee's court, "the money stays in his pocket". You can read the statement fully here (scroll down for the English translation).

Solidaires Informatique is also calling for an immediate 10% increase in workers' salaries to compensate for inflation and for the implementation of a 4-day working week to improve working conditions.

Further, the union has called for a strike, stating that "because Mr Guillemot and his clique only understand the relationship of power, Solidaires Informatique is calling on the employees of Ubisoft Paris to go on strike on Friday 27 January in the afternoon, from 2 to 6 pm."

4A Games have released a SDK for Metro Exodus for free for anyone who owns the game on PC and wants to make Mods for the game

We've heard your requests for things like mod support and, to be honest, we always wanted to do this, it's just never been realistically possible until now. Over the years, we've seen so many Metro mods or themed levels created with other engines, but now we give you a chance to fulfil all your Metro wishes in the very engine where Metro was born.

We're thrilled to pull back the curtain and release Exodus SDK for you all to play with for free! To run it, you just need to have Metro Exodus (2019) or Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition installed on your machine. This isn't just simple mod support – we're giving you our full Editor as it was the day we released Metro Exodus, with the ability to create standalone content run from a basic executable. We've integrated Mod.io support, so it's really easy to manage and share your content. If you also know visual script, our Visual Script Editor leaves the doors wide open with possibilities, so get creative! Along with some tutorial levels and as an example of a fully featured, shipped level, we've included a full unpacked Metro Exodus sandbox level for you to tear apart using our tools. Feel yourself a 4A Games team member – we've provided you with everything our Designers, Artists, and Animators have access to!

There are a few things to note in the EULA (boring), but the main stuff you must keep in mind includes this – you can't use it for commercial purposes, share it behind a paywall, or sell anything you make with it. We're not looking to enter the engine licensing business, this is purely something meant for the community, and we hope you get inspired to create some really wild things.

We've been building this engine since the studio opened in 2005, and it's seen a lot of iteration and improvement over the years. It's still not perfect, and we continue developing it daily, but we're really proud of our team's efforts and we hope that you'll enjoy getting your hands dirty with it.

Documentation, tutorials, and additional information can be found in public documentation.

SDK Features

SCENE EDITOR
The Scene Editor is the main tool you use while working on a level. It is mainly used for adding and manipulating all kinds of objects, from NPCs and weapons to patrol points, restrictors, and proxies.

MODEL EDITOR / VIEWER
The Model Editor allows you to change collision properties, textures, materials, add locators and texture presets, edit animation tags and other animation properties.

NAVIGATION
The Navigation Mode allows you to create/edit the navigation mesh (aka: AI map) of the level. This is required for the AI (enemies, friends, etc.) to move through the level.

PARTICLES
The Particles Mode allows you to create/edit particles in the game.

TERRAIN TOOL
The Terrain Tool allows you to edit terrain for your level. Valleys, mountains, caves, uneven or sloped ground, etc. You can easily modify both shape and appearance by using a range of tools.

WEATHER EDITOR
The Weather Editor allows you to create weather presets to use within weather volumes. There are several options to adjust: Skybox, Sun, Clouds to Post Process, Snow/Water Levels, etc. You can create different types of weather, Day/Night Cycles, or Modifiers.

CAMERA TRACK EDITOR
The Track Editor is used for creating cutscenes, camera spans, camera shakes, and screen effects.

VISUAL SCRIPT
The VS (Visual Script) Editor allows scripting complex gameplay features and AI behavior without writing a single line of code. The main advantages of visual scripts include their simplicity and clear visual feedback to the user. Their logic is founded upon so-called events which are produced in the scripts by specific triggers, and further processing of these events.

Microsoft quarterly earning. I normally don't pay attention to this sort of stuff really but this one was very interesting because hardware sales for Xbox were down 13%. For a console to have lower hardware sales a little after 2 years after release is a bit concerning. Not to mention they had some crazy deals on the Series S during the holidays. I was even thinking of getting one to just throw in the bedroom. I'm guessing this is because of the complete lack of exclusives from xbox.

I should clarify the 13% down is a combination of lower the price of the console and unit sales being down. Still not good for you console to be selling less units 2 years in.

For what it's worth that's partly a result of heavy discounting of consoles, not just because unit sales are down.

Well from what the article is saying the 13% decline is in hardware sales only. It's not talking about the revenue that number is given in a different area.

It's revenue, not units. Sales and revenue are interchangeable terms in most tech financials. If you're curious it's Slide 13 of their presentation for Q2 FY 23. Console companies don't use units often since units shipped and unit sales are not the same. The exception is if they are trying to brag about a milestone, which this isn't.

Ok looking at it seems it was a combination of the lower price and hardware sales being down.
