Blizzard are bringing a selection of their games over to Steam starting with Overwatch 2

You'll still need a battle.net account though

GTA 6 coming with 2B USD price tag, it's reported. Tough to recoup, I'd hazard:

I'm curious how they came up with that number. $2 billion over lifetime of the game is more plausible, I'm skeptical they've spent $2 billion already when they haven't even started marketing (aka they wouldn't have made the ad buys yet).

Capcom showing no signs of slowing down re: Resident Evil 9 + surprise AAA project reveal coming autumn 2024:

Amazon back at it in wanting in on gaming with Skull Island: Rise of Kong – coming to PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series X, Switch:

Tencent are becoming the majority shareholder in Techland (Dying Light , Dead Island, Call of Juarez)

https://techland.net/news/techlands-next-chapter-and-the-road-ahead

Today I am happy to announce the partnership with Tencent who are in the process of becoming Techland's majority shareholder.

Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move full speed ahead with the execution of the vision for our games. We have chosen an ally who has already partnered with some of the world's finest video game companies and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways of doing things.

Saudi flimsy privacy laws, persecution, and surveillance history might result in Google + Microsoft unethically sharing user information to those ends after expansion into the country.

Sitting German government is allocating in excess of 20B USD to seriously bolster domestic semiconductor production. Intel and TSMC tipped as biggest beneficiaries.

Apparently similar to plans in the USA, there have been Western issues matching, for example, Taiwanese (unwearying) labor standards in working the foundries, I’ve read elsewhere.

Exoprimal passes 1M player mark, Capcom confirms:

Honestly not that great when you consider that the game is on GP for both PC and console.
Good point. I mentioned this elsewhere but have two buddies who’d bought it (PS) and walked away thinking it has F2P written all over it despite the price tag – but do enjoy a couple rounds here, there for some dumb fun. I think Capcom, who’s been on fire, could have done better; we were all interested here when this was announced, remember that?

This kind of news makes me glad I got the PS5 with the disk drive. I make a point to buy anything tencent gets a cut of used.

Disappointing news. Im not a fan of all the consolidation in the industry at all. It being Tencent is even worse.
I understand the fear of censorship but I honestly can’t think of a single example of them messing with a studio they purchased. You got anything? I can’t seem to find anyone else that knows either. Until then I’ll try to remain optimistic. Who knows maybe they have yet to create their magnum opus and with a huge budget they may be able to do so.

Oh yea I remember. Honestly I saw gameplay videos not to long ago and it still looks pretty decent. Reminds me of Overwatch with Capcoms only little spin on the genre. I just haven't had the desire to even attempt to play it. All the bad reviews I saw though were complaining about forced PVP which isn't an issue for me but I guess more people wanted PVE MP.

Its less about censorship and more about willingly giving money to a company that gives support to the Chinese Communist Party.

I'm sure that I do it unintentionally all the time, but if I can avoid it I certainly will.

I’m more concerned with data sharing and database building than censorship with anything on Tencent’s dime. Zaz’ ask for RL examples is a fair one though that has me at the very least re-examining my prejudices (read: concerns). China’s history is one of rampant intellectual and information theft across sectors so I don’t feel unreasonable in wanting them out of gaming.

Ubisoft officially cancels the sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising, which amongst a flailing portfolio was kind of a sleeper hit, IMO. Ubi again making curious choices as they tighten their belts. SMH.

New report on Xbox performance. Game pass sees growth but hardware revenue is down. I think Xbox hardware revenue has been down the last 3 quarters now. I'm starting to wonder if sales will end up being lower than last gen at this point.

I wonder how many Xbox guys switched to PC? With all their exclusives and Gamepass being on there i dont really get the point of the Xbox console anymore, other than ease of use. That might be a factor, along with Sonys strong first party presence and brand loyalty from last gen carrying over.

Immortals is like 10 or 12 bucks for a physical copy, I'm not sure it did very well.

CDPR are letting go of around 9% (100 people) of thier team between now and Q1 2024

To meet our own high expectations and ambitions to create the best role-playing games, we not only want to have the best people but also the right teams. What we mean by that is having teams that are built around our projects' needs; teams that are more agile and more effective. At this point in time, we're certain that for CD PROJEKT RED to grow, we need to be consistent in implementing that approach.

We've carefully assessed all teams in the company in terms of their expected contribution to the delivery of our strategy. There's no easy way to say this, but today we are overstaffed. We have talented people on board who are finishing their tasks and — based on current and expected project needs — we already know we don't have other opportunities for them in the next year. The outcome is the studio parting ways with around 100 people, which is roughly 9% of the entire team. This will not be immediate as some employees will be let go as late as Q1 2024 but, in the spirit of transparency, we've chosen to share the information now. We want team members to have ample time to process and adjust to the change, and we've also made sure to offer everyone a comprehensive severance package.
