Serious Movie Discussion XXXVIX

I enjoy the Scream series for the most part. Scream was a masterpiece. Scream 2 was pretty good. Scream 3 was fun, albeit a bit hokey. But Scream 4 was TERRIBLE. It's clear Wes Craven has lost his touch as a director.

Good posts. I mostly agree, though Scream 3's cheesiness keeps me from considering it great. It was just way too silly. But.... the killer in Scream 3 is my favorite of the entire franchise. I love how the big reveal was impossible to predict (whereas all the others had a ton of foreshadowing).

The first film is hands down the best, and my favorite.

S2 is ok, though I consider it quite boring overall. Killers were cool.

Scream 4 though, what a horrific piece of absolute diarrhea. They went full retard with that one. I can't say enough negative things about it. It was out and out an awful piece of shit from beginning to end (with only like 2 interesting parts hidden deeply within). ("Fuck you Bruce Willis" was pretty funny though). Literally, for S4, it's as if Craven forgot how to make movies and made a legit Stab film (a retarded spoof of Scream, aka Scary Movie) it was that bad. They tried to be way too "funny" and never took anything seriously. Also, the color composition of the whole film was WAY too over-saturated. It looked NOTHING like the original three films (which all looked exactly alike). Ugh, it just makes me want to vomit thinking about it. I hate S4. I abhor it. It is an abomination on this Earth, and its very existance is a cancer. I wish it was never made. It's a slap in the face to the fans and the rest of the franchise. It's such a stupid and lame film. If I could, I would slap Wes Craven, Bob Weinstein, and Kevin Williamson in the face for bringing that utter farce to the screen. Fuck Scream 4.

That being said, I always wanted a 4th Scream film. Just not the one they gave us. I wanted something as serious as the first film, but with the size and scope of the third film, with a great killer to boot. We got none of that. Killers sucked. Motive sucked. Reveal sucked. Entire execution sucked.

As great as Scream is, Scream 4 is the exact polar opposite. It's abject! It's like comparing Tommy Wiseau to Steven Spielberg.

That's a lot of hating on Scream 4 with little substance lol.

4 is entertaining as hell.

Am I the only that likes My Soul to Take?

Well I re-watched Night of the Living Dead last night. Still an amazing movie.

One of the thing that struck me is how pure the movie is. It's a movie soley focused on survival. Every other film has something going for it. Dawn has segments about living in a mall. Day has segments about the conflict between the military and the scientists. Land had that class-warefare stuff going on. And you can say the same for almost every other zombie movie out there.

That means there is time to breath, time to take a recess from the zombie plauge. In Night, there is no such thing. There is suspense all the time. It's a siege movie.

Another fun thing is the devil in the details. Most of the zombies in the movie you see repeatedly, individual zombies returning in diffrent scenes. This gives it a subconcious continuity. It draws you into the film more. Mad Max: The Road Warrior did a similar thing and it worked there too.

So basically... Night of the Living Dead succedes at being an amazing horror classic despite commiting Ed Wood-level mistakes:icon_chee (like it switching from night to day in-between cuts).

I also watched Amerikanski Graffiti for the first time. It's probably a perfect zeitgeist movie. However, I just found the subject a bit disintresting. It seems like a nostalgia film. So had I been around in the 50's, I might have enjoyed it more.

Haven't seen it in the movie news thread, maybe I missed it, but is it common knowledge that Morricone is going to score The Hateful Eight?

DAAAAYYYUUUUUUMN.

I'm not American, and I wasn't around in the 70s let alone the 50s, and I still dug that movie for some reason.

That opening scene where the guy loses control of his bike. I crack up just thinking about it.

it had the most random postscript in any movie i can think of

^^^^

Can't argue with that.

Remember reading ages ago, (maybe it was from Easy Riders/Raging Bulls?) that the characters were composites of his friends in the 50s, a lot of whom ended up meeting similar fates - dying in car accidents/'Nam.

I think it was an end of innocence thing. Transition to the harsh world of adulthood mirrors the transition from the 50s to the cynical 60s.

Has Bullitt watched Mad Max: Fury Road yet? Looking forward to that write-up.

I love American Graffiti, one of the best soundtracks of all time, too.

This looks amazing.

I just watched this 5 times in a row.

I'm struggling through French Connection right now. I like Friedkin's movies and this one has a great reputation but I can't get into it.

Anyone have any opinions on it?

I think maybe I'm just not in the mood for it right now.

Looks terrific. The pedigree behind this thing is off the charts.

And speaking of Brendan Gleeson's son, I just saw Ex Machina. Great movie. Compelling dialogue and thought-provoking questions throughout. Still, the main selling point was clearly the atmosphere which was off-the-charts tense and creepy from nearly the get go and gradually became even more so over the course of the film.

Felt bad for Domhnall. Helped Ava out and not only did not even get a hand job for his troubles, he was left to die alone in that facility.

Your brain must be broken. Have you perhaps been hit in the head recently?
