There was some sort of a Karloff marathon on TCM a few days ago

You have Karloff marathons on your TCM? These days, TCM Nordic mostly shows modern independent movies and the few classic movies they do have are just the same 15 flicks shown on repeat.

The Walking Dead, The Body Snatchers and The Mummy I haven't seen

The Mummy is obviously a classic. Haven't seen the other two.

On the subject of underrated Karloff flicks, I really like British Intelligence, though that is a spy movie and not a horror, but a really taut one at that. They Man they Could not Hang is another one, and it's atmospheric remake Before I Hang is pretty good too. Karloff's segment in the anthology Black Sabbath is a real delight. The Crimson Cult is probably the most disappointing since it set itself up to be a real riot but like so many flims just fizzled out through the narrative. Still alright though.

but it also hasn't yet had any of the hilarious highs

Well the first two Seasons of Simpsons arn't really that funny to me either. I really like the storytelling in them but their humor peak is far from reached.

Did you see him in The Battle of Shaker Heights or A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints? He's really good in both but I prefer the former, such a great little gem of a movie.

Nah. Only seen his mainstream roles.

This reference allows me to inform you that I am currently on Season 2

Any favorites so far?

Come to think of it, that might be the first role I've seen her play where the character wasn't either dumb or scared. I might have to look out some of her more serious work now...

Haha there are plenty of movies were she isn't like that. The Proffesionals comes to mind, a really good Western.

All of this displayed ever so subtly through a few sparse lines of dialogue, Claudia's facial expressions, and the mafia's lack of action or passion. Simply brilliant. What a powerful scene.

A really powerful scene.

I like Lethal Weapon. Haven't seen it in a long time though. Might have to put it in the Netflix watchlist.

Well anyone who likes Lethal Weapon can't be all bad ;)

I feel like the new Jason Bourne movie is the type where most people will walk out of the theater saying, "oh wow, that was a huge piece of shit," and then if you asked them to rate it they'd be like, "i dunno- 6.5/10."

@Bullitt68 I think it was in a different thread Karloff films were mentioned and you listed some that you liked better than his widely known films.

There was some sort of a Karloff marathon on TCM a few days ago so I recorded a few. The Walking Dead, The Body Snatchers and The Mummy I haven't seen, and I also got Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Black Cat.

I believe you mentioned a few of these am I correct?

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of shadow's Dracula thread where I said the following:

To be honest, I'm not really a fan of any of the Universal monster movies. I prefer literally everything else that Lugosi and Karloff did in the 1930s and 1940s like Murders in the Rue Morgue, White Zombie, The Old Dark House, The Black Cat, The Raven, The Invisible Ray, The Walking Dead (not the TV show :D), Black Friday, Before I Hang, etc.

I don't think Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, or The Mummy are bad, but I don't think they're all that good, either. The Black Cat, that's a wickedly awesome movie and probably the highlight of the Lugosi/Karloff pairings; The Body Snatcher is IMO Karloff's greatest performance and one of the strongest efforts in the Val Lewton canon; and The Walking Dead is more hidden gem material than underrated masterpiece, but it's still more enjoyable to me than the Universal monster movies.

Any favorites so far?

In terms of whole episodes, the one where Bart wants to be a daredevil is my favorite. Beginning to end, it's just solid writing with the best mixture I've seen yet of genuine heart with Homer not wanting to see Bart get hurt and legit comedy with Homer fucking himself up when he accidentally does the stunt he was trying to keep Bart from doing (that's also been the hardest I've laughed so hard, particularly when the rescue helicopter keeps smashing his head off of the cliff and then ambulance hits a tree and he falls out the back right back down the cliff :D).

The runner-up would be when Mr. Burns runs for governor. Very Trump-esque in a lot of ways, plus they do that awesome Citizen Kane reference:

As for individual lines, my first laugh came from Homer's line in the episode where Bart goes to genius school and blows up the chemistry lab. Homer is trying to wash the green shit off of Bart and he tells him, "I bet Einstein turned himself all sorts of colors before he invented the light bulb." And then I think the sharpest line I've heard yet was when Mr. Burns is trying to give Homer a promotion so he'll convince the people that his plant is safe but Homer sees through it. Mr. Burns says, "You're not as stupid as you look, or sound, or our best testing indicates."

Man here I've been babbling about Season 2 not being at the same comedy standards but those are all grade-A jokes. I had even forgotten that Burns for Major was a Season 2 episode.

I remember the first time I saw that Daredevil scene. One of the first Simpsons episodes I watched. I laughed so hard when Homer went down the second time that my dad trekked into the room and was like "WTF are you laughing about you crazy kid!?":D

How does one acquire foreign films?

Up until about 2011 I've never been much into movies until I got Netflix, at which point I discovered the brilliance of the many foreign films I've seen. I'm in Canada tho, and Netflix is far more limited than it is in the US. Canada also doesn't have the Amazon Prime movie features.

I can't get enough of this stuff on Netflix but when I find a great movie, naturally I research it and want to see more movies from the same actors and directors but unless I'm willing to spend $40+ to buy a movie to see if it's any good, I'm sol.

Where can I get access to this stuff?

Do you get netflix discs in the mail as well? They have lots of titles available that aren't streaming.

If you live in a city of decent size you may have a movie rental store still around somewhere. If there is and it isn't a chain rental store (are there still chain video rental stores?) chances are it has some foreign films. There's a great video store in my city that has almost every title I've ever wanted to see.

Then there's always piracy. I don't pirate movies myself but I'm sure someone else could send you in the right direction.

Disc service isn't available in Canada. Shipping isn't quite as convenient in Canada as it is in the US and it's a lot more expensive.

I'll have to look around for a movie rental place. Honestly don't even know if we have any.

I don't want to pirate, either. For the most part I like to support the things I like. If I can't legally attain the stuff I'm curious about at a reasonable cost, I may have to resort to doing something I don't want to.

Maybe I'll just have to set up an American Amazon Prime account and find a way to stream it here. Amazon Prime in Canada is literally just free two day shipping on some items, if possible. It sucks.

yeah agreed- Canada sucks.

One thing you should try though is the local canadian library. Down here in the big time, many libraries will have a pretty good selection of DVD's available, including many a foreign film.

Going to see Don't Breathe tomorrow. I hope it's good.

Quick take:

Don't watch Don't Breathe.

Don't watch Stranger Things.

Watch The Get Down.

Heard so many positive things about Stranger Things. No good?

It's good. It's really good.

I have lots of thoughts. On vacation at the moment so trying to spend it Web free as much as possible.

Short version - I think it's nostalgia bait with little to no understanding of why the things it has so much love for worked. Other things this year have got it right - Pete's Dragon, The Get Down.

If you guys end up discussing it down the line I'll be happy to jump in when I'm back.

Cheers all.

I hope you have a crappy vacation! :p

war dogs was good, i lold plenty and the plot did not disappoint

Just watched Dersu Uzala by Kurosawa. I thought it was a little bit longer than it needed to be, but on the whole I really loved it. It was actually when The Revenant came out and Iñárritu mentioned this film as an influence that I first heard about it, and you can definitely see that. Visually I loved how it looked (just wish there was a blu ray available), you hear the term poetic thrown about a lot but it was very much like that, some of the shots where beautiful:

screen-shot-2016-02-16-at-9-42-37-pm.png

And in terms of the story I'd be surprised if this didn't influence Embrace of the Serpent (which you people still need to watch), that's what I thought of right away, with an indigenous hunter leading more 'civilised' men on an expedition through the wilderness. I really liked that too, it dealt with the exact same sort of ideas like the loss of the indigenous way of life, their belief system etc. and more generally with man's relationship to the wilderness. Common enough themes I suppose, but I really like that sort of thing.

Quick take:

Don't watch Don't Breathe.

Don't watch Stranger Things.

Watch The Get Down.
I didn't get into Stranger Things from episode 1 either. But I did watch The Night Of and only really got into it in Episode 4, even though it was decent. The structure was there, it was a rather empty show and lacking in detail.
But The Get Down, oh yeah. Bring that baby to momma! I gorged on that sumptuous meal of tv.
