If a high level mma striker were to face a boxer in boxing, but with 4 oz mma gloves rather than the big boxing gloves/shields, would it be substantially closer or still a clinic from the boxer?

Boxer wins in a Boxing Fight, MMA fighter in a MMA fight

I don't think the gloves will make much of a difference, the boxer has the advantage of training solely that art and will have better technique.

But who takes CM Punk vs. Mayweather in an MMA fight (cage with 4oz gloves)? That one's really twisting the ol' noodle.

Well. Mma fighters condition themselves to go 5 5 min rounds at the max. Boxers condition for 12 to 15 3 min rnds.

The deeper the fight goes the more on the boxers side it will waver. But with th smaller gloves there could easily be a early ko.

With all that said i would have to give it to the boxer more often than not.

I think boxers have a better chance in MMA than MMA fighers have in boxing.

Will the boxer still be better at boxing?

Because this answer seems too obvious.

Easy answer because CM Punk is not an MMA fighter.

boxers would get wrecked most of the time cause kicks, clinch, knee's etc.

Aldo would chop down and get most boxing limping so hard that he'd be able to outbox them if they can still stand.

No boxer would even get close enough to punch someone like wonderboy or jones. The kicks would just throw them off so hard since they aren't used to mma striking range.

Not really. At least MMA fighters do some boxing and striking training. The boxer would not stand a chance against amateur wrestlers or grapplers. And I'm not even going to mention kicks and clinch fighting.

The 4 oz gloves would level the playing field some but I think the boxer stll has a huge advantage.

Personally I prefer 40oz gloves

In a boxing match, the thing that would be readily apparent is the huge gap in striking defense. In general, it's not all that good in MMA. With some being almost non-existent. While the small gloves might favor the MMA striker to some degree because of the partial dependence on gloves in boxing defense, the head and body movement would still greatly favor the boxer. An accurate boxer throwing combinations with 4 oz gloves on an MMA fighter with only decent defense would be ugly...and would likely not last very long. As MMA fans, we tend to greatly overestimate the striking skill of our fighters in comparison with an athlete that only trains a striking discipline. An MMA fighter would likely easily beat them under the rules of MMA, and vice versa.

Of course a boxer has a chance. Using your hands is still a huge part of MMA, and it is not as easy as some of you guys pretend it is to just run in and tackle someone.

Look what just happened to Werdum, who is supposedly one of the best heavyweights ever. You really think MMA fighters are all so lightning quick that they can just tackle every boxer without getting the shit knocked out of them?

There is this weird belief on this forum that boxers' feet are glued to the ground.

Old, fat, Ray Mercer did a number to a former UFC heavyweight champ. Would that happen every time? Of course not. But it can happen.

It would be neat if they implemented some exhibition fights between two fighters with special rules. Wouldn't count toward rankings or official record. Each guy gets to use only one discipline, whatever is their bread and butter. Not gonna happen though.

UFC was supposed to determine what was the best fighting discipline, and the correct answer was a combination of everything. But 23 years later people are still debating who wins in style vs. style fights...

the gloves they use in boxing barely slow your hands and don't take away power like some people claim

they do help you block a bit though so i'd figure its a bigger advantage for the boxer if anything

No way.....

MMA fighters actually train striking....boxers dont train kicks, wrestling, jiu jitsu or mma related clinch work.....

There are many more ways for the boxer to lose in mma than vice versa.....

but no seriously tho, you're talking about giving someone who has a distinct advantage in hand skills smaller gloves. Vs an opponent who likely has no defense, ala 90% of MMA fighters lol
Also boxing gloves are not 'shields' you're not blocking with the glove. thats not what they're made for. Hell overeem shelled up vs AA in his last fight and blocked a ton of shit the same way he would in K1..but with 4oz gloves..using gloves as a 'shield' is just some amateur shit. Also no professional fighter is using 16oz bag gloves ina fight. Usually 8 oz gloves iirc its not really that huge a difference

I dont think either one has a great chance in the opposite sport, atleast at the upper tiers.

Sylvia didn't try to take the fight to the ground......he was never that type of mma fighter.....

Werdum ran face first into Stipe's fist because he wasn't trying to use his best mma skillset....

If a fighter gameplans properly.....there is almost no way a boxer will stand much of a chance.....
