Sentry - The Worst Comic Origin Ever

This is probably why some kid injected himself with a dead butterfly thinking it would give him super powers, instead it killed him....

Was he absorbed into Marvel from some other comic company brand?

Seeing most comments here, I guess people skip right past (long-ish ?) posts. He's an original creation for Marvel comics by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee with a meta angle.

His origin and his design is 'corny' by design, it wasn't intended to be judged in a vacuum. He was erased from the memory of Marvel universe somewhere in the past, and he already was close to all of major heroes before that. It was a way to retroactively insert a new hero into Marvel history.

So the story goes was that the writer, Paul Jenkins, found old drawings and notes from Jack Kibry for a proto-Sentry, and he wanted to turn that into a full-fledged official hero. It was all meant to be a throwback to the Golden Age era of comics, such as the alliterative name of Robert Reynolds, the 'magic' serum, the bombastic 'a million exploding suns', the somewhat garish costume, but meant as a subversion because they challenged some of the old school superhero tropes. Superman, but flawed in that Marvel way.

They even held interviews and had an article in Wizard Comics magazine, but it was all a ruse. There was never any forgotten artwork found of Sentry, so the whole real life thing was supposed to mirror the events in the comics. I thought it was a very unique and meta way to introduce a new character. It was in a period when Joe Quesada was editor in chief, and he kind of shaked the industry up with lots of out-of-the-ordinary projects. The whole of MCU lifted major, major parts from the Ultimate line too.

I've got the TPB somewhere. It's bad. The story sucks and the fight scenes suck, and the art sucks. His backstory is dark and edgy and boring. Probably the worst thing is they don't commit to him being this Superman level force that ends conflicts. He's always derailed by his shitty grimdark alter ego, or written to be sidelined by anxiety. Or he just gets inexplicably overpowered anyway because the plot needs him to lose.

He's like a low self esteem version of Superman. Someone wrote that, and thought people would enjoy reading it.

With the new Thunderbolts movie out, everyone seems to be talking about this hero named Sentry. All I see is gifs and clips of him doing his thing. The excitement!

Thing is, who is he?

Well, apparently hes Marvels version of Superman. Maybe even more powerful. He apparently has a darkside called void which makes him even more overpowered. My problem with him is how the writers created his backstory.

Is he from a distant planet? No. Is he a mutant? No. Was he granted his powers from some other entity like Galactus? No. Gamma radiation? No.

Turns out he was an addict that broke into a lab and stumbled upon a Golden Sentry Serum which gave him the powers of a million exploding suns. Yup. An omnipotent, overpowered super dude junkie with mental health issues.

In the year 2000, thats the best story they could come up with. Also, nice original costume. Cant think of a comic book hero who you could dislike more.
- He is the bootleg Super-Man. Nobody cares besides hippies.

Sentry isn't even the first Marvel Superman.
