With the new Thunderbolts movie out, everyone seems to be talking about this hero named Sentry. All I see is gifs and clips of him doing his thing. The excitement!

Thing is, who is he?

Well, apparently hes Marvels version of Superman. Maybe even more powerful. He apparently has a darkside called void which makes him even more overpowered. My problem with him is how the writers created his backstory.

Is he from a distant planet? No. Is he a mutant? No. Was he granted his powers from some other entity like Galactus? No. Gamma radiation? No.

Turns out he was an addict that broke into a lab and stumbled upon a Golden Sentry Serum which gave him the powers of a million exploding suns. Yup. An omnipotent, overpowered super dude junkie with mental health issues.

In the year 2000, thats the best story they could come up with. Also, nice original costume. Cant think of a comic book hero who you could dislike more.

Yup, that's pretty bad.

'A million exploding suns.'

Literally 1.3 million Earths could fit in the sun.

His origin and his design is 'corny' by design, it wasn't intended to be judged in a vacuum. He was erased from the memory of Marvel universe somewhere in the past, and he already was close to all of major heroes before that. It was a way to retroactively insert a new hero into Marvel history.

So the story goes was that the writer, Paul Jenkins, found old drawings and notes from Jack Kibry for a proto-Sentry, and he wanted to turn that into a full-fledged official hero. It was all meant to be a throwback to the Golden Age era of comics, such as the alliterative name of Robert Reynolds, the 'magic' serum, the bombastic 'a million exploding suns', the somewhat garish costume, but meant as a subversion because they challenged some of the old school superhero tropes. Superman, but flawed in that Marvel way.

They even held interviews and had an article in Wizard Comics magazine, but it was all a ruse. There was never any forgotten artwork found of Sentry, so the whole real life thing was supposed to mirror the events in the comics. I thought it was a very unique and meta way to introduce a new character. It was in a period when Joe Quesada was editor in chief, and he kind of shaked the industry up with lots of out-of-the-ordinary projects. The whole of MCU lifted major, major parts from the Ultimate line too.

I dont know, I think its a pretty cool origin story, much more relatable than falling through the universe from an exploding alien world, we all got issues, we all got vices, we've all been through fucked up situations because of our own terrible decisions, even though he's powerful as fuck he is also still very flawed and fragile, I dig it

I like that he's a drug addict and that he's overpowered but mentally unstable.

The only thing I don't like is that he got his powers from some serum in a lab. It devalues the super soldier serum to have another serum that's so much more powerful.

His power needs to come from magic or outer space.

Ting actually lit fam di void a part of all of us wi try fi forget but ting jus come back cyaan get rid of it wid therapy or meds jus haffi face it an' deal wid it ourselves 📠 bro got it from di lab cuz it's a human problem cosmic entity nuh have taym fi void dem got cosmic problems fi deal wid

I knew the character existed but I've never read anything with him in it. I looked up his powers, and he basically has every super power ever conceived. This makes me hate him automatically (OP heroes are boring to me).

He was pretty well done in the movie though. Still not a fan of the character, but it could have been worse.

Yes

I could not stand the artwork in the Sentry book. I tried and couldn't get into it.

Ya. Its 2025. I understood when they came up with these kinda concepts back in the 50s or 60s but now...come on. Be more original ffs. Drinks super serum....instantly the most powerful being around. Gtfo.

Meh. Ive been done with hollywood superhero flicks for a while. Maybe one day, someone with balls can make a raw, r rated comic flick that doesnt require merchandising.
