Sell outs????

All those comedians who went to Saudi Arabia
Bill Burr is the biggest sell out. Years he preached and crapped on people like Beyonce for selling out for doing private concerts in the middle east.

In the last week he's been doing free ads for the Saudi gov't saying it isn't bad and being a huge shill. Probably the biggest sell out of all time.,

some good replies and I'm glad it wasn't all about music, which I thought it would be.

Special hespect to @Plutoburn for the jackie chan stuff which I was completely unaware of and for @Aegon Spengler @Brandino for the insight into the comedians selling their souls for Saudi cash.

You could say the same thing for those LIV golfers but you can't really sellout by leaving an already souless PGA tour I guess.

I keep having this argument in my head, is Snoop or Ice Cube the bigger sellout?

I've landed on Snoop. Ice doing cutsie family friendly movies like are we there yet or the one about the girl QB after telling me to fuck the police seems pretty sellie outie but watching commercials, and only commercials cause i don't watch the stupid show, of Snoop trading banter with Michael Bubbles, Reba McIntyre and some guy name Nial, about some long in the tooth, holy fuck do people watch this shit every week singing show has snoop higher on my list.

On the rock side of things Bono went from wanting to throw bricks through windows as an Irish street punk to a prancing pony forcing his bad poetry love songs onto my I-Phone through a huge corporate deal with the biggest company on earth and the time and made it almost impossible to remove that shite, so yeah fuck him

And in sports I'd like to give a special fuck you you self enriching asshats that ran the NCAA and needed to keep college athletes poor but pure but are now are pouring as much money as they can to win the 18 year old with the rocket arm for your dear old alma mater, where he might stay for a year before getting a better deal at hated Rival State University. We'd be much more competitive internationally as a country if we just eliminated college sports and mad all of them semi pro leagues or club teams for the non-paying sports and you could actually afford to send you kid to school to learn and not just get drunk as fuck on fall saturday mornings....

I also had the argument in my head is it sellout or sell out and evidently it is sellout which makes my title looooooook soooooo stuuuuuupid but I'ma leave it up there as a lesson to myself...

Who do you consider to be a gigantic sell out?

I have a couple of candidates but don’t want to steer the conversation in any particular direction too early

So tell me who you think is a sell out and if this thread gets some replies I’ll jump back in with mine

And if it doesn’t I’ll disavow all knowledge of it and any responsibility for its care

I'll shave my legs I'll wear a bra , I'll even cut my penis off for you....

Love me some reel big fish.

Allow me to contribute. This scumbag right here comes to mind right away.

Metalheads we’re not pleased with the black album, but when load and reload were released the word sellout became synonymous with Metallica

It was always bullshit. Metallica deserves shit for Napster. But they put out 2 decades worth of good music before finally ruined their credibility.

Load reload and garage were all amazing and Metallica "fans" were being little bitches.

Same for greenday....who I don't think actually sold out sold out til American idiot. But punks can't tolerate anyone who can afford rent so they got hit with that tag just for getting bigger.

Green Day...twice apparently. When that album in 94 came out people said they sold out. When that album in 2000 something came out, the youngins once again said they sold out, not realizing that they were already sell outs.

It wasn't fair to call them sellouts just for getting bigger. They didn't change much between kerplunk and Dookie at all.

Occasionally I'd see memes of celeb with no haters, and Jackie Chan would be one of them but a lot of people in the west doesn't know that he is actually one of the biggest sell out. He was my childhood idol growing up in Taiwan, but now here and in Hong Kong, he is deeply unpopular because there were many personal life scandals but most importantly, he went from being a freedom fighter for Hong Kong to now kowtowing to CCP in order to make as much money as he can.

Here is him in 1989 condemning CCP for the Tiananmen massacre when it would score brownie points with people in Hong Kong furthering his career.

Once he recognize the market and earning potential if he aligns himself with the communist party, he started to make pro-Beijin statement and publicly expressed desire to actually join the party.
ok, but it's a bit different if you're in a country and you say the wrong thing and they kidnap you for months. I don't think it's quite like some comedian doing beer ads or whatever.

Anyway, everyone sells out sooner or later, everyone but me so far as I can tell. I've seen people do things you'd never think, friends and famous folk. I never though Bruce Springsteen would cash out like he has the last 30 years, different guy than that lean, scrawny idealistic working class hero of the 70's and 80's. He was alienating fans talking politics recently but it was shortlived, I couldn't help wondering if he was worried about his current projects (movie, new box set) sales. Wouldn't surprise me. People are people, they aren't the same as the were on other occasions, life happes, life wears us down, changes us, takes things out of us, gives things to us that make us think different.

Agreed.

Also, is a band a sellout if they never had integrity to begin with? I’m thinking of bands like Nickelback, Smashmouth, Disturbed, Trapt, etc.
They clearly never had any intention of doing anything other than maximizing their revenue.

They didn’t have like 3 or 4 great albums then drop The Black Album, like some bands.
great question, Greil Marcus said one thing about Elvis that pretty much was on target, he quoted Melville's "only the man who says no is free" and then said Elvis' "yes" was the biggest, grandest yes of all. Elvis took a lot of shit, made a lot of moves that would upset fans, making silly movies, doing silly songs, wearing silly costumes but it was all so huge and grand and the times he said no were really all the more special such as the 68 special. Elvis, for his side, once asked by a newsman why he recorded some of the stuff he did in the sixties, and Elvis just politely said, "sir, I don't suppose you've ever been poor".

Also, the closest competitor to Elvis, MJ, was similar in his complete lack of integrity when it came to sales. Change his color, his voice, his face, thank god he was such a great artist. We have to take the bitter with the sweet if we want an artists work at all. And.., as I always say, they are the ones that have to live(or die) with themselves.

Rage against the machine becoming rage for the machine wasn’t what I ever saw coming
don't know much about them but I know exactly what you're talking about having watched so many others do it.

My Muay Thai coach once told me in response to my saying something to the effect of "i'll never...," He told me he was in spain for a fight, they offered him, whatever, a grand to take a dive, he adamantly said no, they offered him five grand and he still said no, then they offered him 10 grand and he said "fuck ya".

Don't forget the entertainers and sports stars...

I live in the Virgin Islands Saint Johns. I'm not trying to argue or troll
What exactly is the problem with that? I honestly don't understand the outrage. I'm not trying to argue, I think I'm missing some stuff. Down here it's barely any politics and I'm surrounded by black women from Jamaica or Bahamas. I just don't know

No they were not

I lived through those days, as a fan, and remember them well. Every metal person was very upset with the black album, but some held out hope it was to attract a younger audience through mtv, and they would come back to their roots with the next one. Load showed us all that the glory days were indeed over and never coming back.

Wouldn't condemn them as sellouts like some, but that is inevitable with metal fans in general. We are very clique-ish and do not like change so quickly.

What's the problem with someone with a following of people, that sell out their morals and ethics for money? Well that depends on your value system..... In some cultures I'm sure it's perfectly fine and if you live in that sort of world it might appear normal.

Dog eat dog....... I guess, survival of the fittest, one day your children will feast on your corpse.....
