Schaub's Comedy Special: Gringo Papi

Yes he did. He's a pathological liar. The story is complete bullshit.

Here's another made up story of his where he's at a mall in Atlanta and one of the security guards greets him as "B Schaub" because "he's a fan".

Bear Grylls used to do the same shit. He would talk about how dangerous it would be to jump from this rock to that other one, and that one little slip could cost your life. Then he makes the jump.

Brendan does the same thing in this clip. He says they're cutting throats in the bathroom, but then notice that part where he goes, "but your boy still went in the bathroom" he just wants credit for being a badass. It's pathetic.

Good on Joe for not even acknowledging that dumb shit and just moving on quickly.

Didn't Joe stop bringing Eddie bravo on because he would say the dumbest shit? Why not hold Schaub to the same standard?

Eddie was tired of getting criticized by people for his conspiracy talks so he stopped doing those podcasts. Plus he thinks covid is a conspiracy and doesn't want to get cancelled for talking about it I imagine. Joe did have a talk with him on one episode where Eddie claimed that atom bombs were not real and just "A lot of dynamite" though lol

How would you know that? I'm just trying to get more perspective on why people even waste their time on something like this.
You keep saying that yet here you are days later still going in circles. If you don't have enough perspective to figure it out by now, I don't think it's going to happen.

I've never understood "haters," I've never understood what gives people any sense of satisfaction/superiority from shitting on someone, but it's all the more embarrassing when the person getting the hate is laughing their way to the bank. That said, Schaub is a special case. Why there isn't a sense on here of "He's one of us/He's our guy" with him coming from MMA and now being so successful is surprising/confusing to me. Why such intense hate? It can't just be because you don't think that he's funny. Instead of Sherdog rallying around a former fighter making good outside the ring/cage, Schaub has become the Sherdog whipping boy. Can you guys explain this shit to me?

From my perspective, here's a dude who by all accounts should never have been as successful at MMA as he was but who had legit success, then he creates a huge podcast and starts an entirely new career, and all the way has been humble and grateful, he has taken and continues to take his lumps, he has seized opportunities but has still opted to take the hard road and is doing shit the right way to improve...but nobody is rooting for him. Not only does nobody on this entire site seem to want him to succeed, everyone on here seems to want him to crash and burn so that they can piss on his ashes and laugh while doing it. What's the deal? Is the guy fucking Chappelle? Of course not. But should the fact that he started a brand new career and is learning and growing as a comedian before our eyes - whereas none of us saw the first 5-15 years in the careers of pretty much any major comedian ever - really be the source of such perversely vitriolic glee?

Sherdog was always an online bastion to me, a place that was better than every other Internet forum/message board. But when it comes to Schaub, reading shit on here is like reading the worst Twitter or Reddit threads. He gets you guys riled up like a fucking pro wrestling heel.

Then don't continually agree to do shows you're not willing to commit to, you're over complicating it.

It's not like he sends someone to walk out on the stage the night of the show to tell the audience who paid and traveled to the venue, "Sorry, Schaub's not here and there's no show so go home." If you're not Chappelle or Burr and you're not a guaranteed sell out at every venue in every market, you book shows and you watch the ticket sales and if the tickets move then you do the show and if they don't you maybe reschedule or you combine dates or worst-case scenario you scrap the show. All of it is done as far out from the actual date as possible. It's by no means uncommon practice specific only to Schaub as further proof that he's the worst person ever.

I don't know, you clearly watch way more comedy podcasts than I do - and you clearly care WAY more than the people you're accusing of overreacting :D

Knowing more ≠ Caring more. You can go ahead and project that onto me if you want, but I just know what I'm talking about and have decided to come in here and offer some informed opinions for the uninformed haters to chew on.

There's no accounting for taste

And to reiterate, I don't think that Schaub's very funny. He's still incredibly green and his special is undoubtedly clunky with tremendous room for improvement. My only issue is with the people who actually go out of their way to say that they've watched all of 75 seconds of Schaub's entire stand-up career and then try to speak authoritatively on his comedy. If you don't like him and you won't watch him, that's fine. Like you said, your taste is your taste. But you can't watch a minute of a dude on stage and then try to act like you're the expert. You can still hate him and think that he's unfunny, but if you don't think that there's evidence of improvement between his first special and his second special, then you have no clue what you're talking about, or, even more likely, you're just hating with no interest in actually getting a clue.

I don't grant you license to use the words "resentment," "envy" or "hatred" in this discussion. You're being dramatic. I didnt use them, in fact I clearly said "hater" isn't an appropriate word.

First, I asked if it was resentment/envy fueling the hatred, meaning are his haters just mad/jealous. If you personally aren't jealous/envious of him and if you personally don't hate him, fair enough. But clearly he's inspired quite vitriolic hatred from the Internet and your own assessment of the situation seemed to paint a picture of people jealous of his success lashing out because he's more fortunate than they are.

You are being quite disingenuous here. Pointing out the advantages someone has had in achieving their success, when that person says shitty things like "people who work at PF Changs dont matter" and "I work so hard" isn't "not liking someone" its being offended by a privileged person acting like a douche. Leonardo Dicaprio and Robert Deniro are thousands of times better actors than Schua is a comedian. A much, much better example would be one of the Kardashians. Or Paris Hilton.

Privilege is - or should be - privilege tout court. But whatever. I won't harp on conceptual specificity. As for the PF Chang's thing, I'm pretty sure that comes from him talking about how someone not in the business hating on him or trying to give him advice to change what he's doing - when what he's doing has been extremely successful and profitable for him - is silly. Like how we make fun of keyboard warriors on here. If a keyboard warrior works at a PF Chang's and is trying to criticize Ngannou, there's a point where you have to draw the line and say, "You work at fucking PF Chang's and Ngannou's the champ." That's not coming from a place of privilege where the "lower class" are spit on as scum. But, again, whatever. The tables will always be tilted against Schaub and no benefits of the doubt will be extended to him. To your last point, your Kardashian comparison is perhaps more apt, although even if you hate Schaub, he was never famous for being famous, he did actually work to achieve things. But at this point, yeah, I guess they're in similar boats, consistently hated by ignorant people who know/care nothing about what they're actually doing with their lives. For the record, I don't care at all about any of the Kardashians, but I'd find Kardashian haters just as sad as Schaub haters. It's being a hater that I find so puzzling.

Oh, it's about Schuab attempting to dismiss his "haters" (read: people who don't like absolute bottom of the barrel hack comedy) by saying their opinions of him don't matter, and then comparing these people to homeless people or cats or waiters at PF Changs. To a goon like Schuab, the comparison is obvious: people who work minimum wage jobs because they werent born winners of the genetic lottery like him, are sub-human.

This is the least charitable interpretation of this possible. See above.

Yes, it is. You're being disingenuous again, bub. Of course I understand that racial themes are fundamental to most comedy. But there are funny/clever/incisive ways to make racial jokes and then there's stuff like Brendan Schuab's impersonation of his Chinese doctor which was tha absolute definition of hack, especially considering the actual guy he's impersonating doesn't have a Chinese accent. and then there's this HILAAAAAAARIOUS cross-cultural zinger:

So if it's funny, it's not racist, but if it's not funny, it's racist? If a joke doesn't land, it just means that it isn't funny. It's fine if you don't find that shit funny - although exaggerating if not straight-up inventing shit to tell stories in a comedy set is par for the course, so if there's a difference between Schaub fictionalizing that story about the UFC doctor and Segura fictionalizing his Wu-Tang story, I'll be interested to hear it - but leveling charges of racism should have a much higher threshold.

I think there is an overwhelming correlation between people spending so much time hating schaub and being unsuccessful. I've never known anyone that was successful that spent so much time hating someone and wishing for their downfall. People complain and say how "lucky" he is while they are sitting on their couch eating doritos while never having the motivation or hard work to be successful. It's just sad really.

I don't like Schaub or pretty much anything he's involved in but I do agree with most of what you said except this. Where are you getting this info from? Chris Distefano is another up and coming comedian and he was going to release his special on youtube. Then at the last minute Netflix decided they wanted it so he canceled that idea. Shane Gillis who also released on youtube made it clear that no one wanted it so he was forced to do it. Comedians are doing this because talented people are having issues getting their special picked up not because they don't want the big pay day that comes with Netflix, Showtime, etc buying it. So they release is on youtube and hope the bump helps them similar with what Andrew Schultz did.

It's the classic "Necessity is the mother of invention." The subscription streaming model has been the way you do things in the comedy world for so long, and so it's of course still deeply entrenched in that industry. You still want Netflix, you still want to lesser degrees HBO or Showtime. I'm not saying that comedians have all decided to say no to everything except YouTube. I'm saying that it's no longer Netflix or nothing. Comedians have realized that there are other ways to find success, and so a shit ton of people have started uploading specials to YouTube, initially because it was their only option but increasingly because they're finding it the best option, and "best" meaning the most effective way to get their content to their fans and the most productive way to get their content to potential new fans and increase ticket sales. So from people like Schulz and Gillis to Mark Normand, Joe List, Sam Morrill, Akaash Singh, Yannis Pappas, DC Benny, they've all put shit out on YouTube either by themselves or with All Things Comedy or what have you and it's provided tremendous bumps, and bumps that they're starting to realize are likely bigger than the bumps that they would've gotten even from a Netflix or a Showtime.

Within the last year or so, there's been a groundswell. YouTube isn't just for the losers who can't hack it in the majors. As the subscription streaming model starts to break apart, YouTube is poised to be the next comedy hot spot. That's why Distefano is constantly joking about him FINALLY getting a Netflix special as the company announces that it's starting to die, and it's why he's said he's either going to put most of the clips up on YouTube anyway or just upload an entirely separate special so that he can have one on Netflix and one on YouTube.

Independently producing and distributing your own content on your own platform is becoming the new model.

It's so funny hearing Schaubisms in the wild lol. Unintentionally one of the funniest comedians on the planet. There I said it.

To be fair, 4 years is enough time to show more improvement at something than Brendan did in that YouTube video. Period.

Shitty, played out premises, hacky conduct, debatably stolen/ripped off material.

Yeah I never said it was good, just that 4 years in comedy is not that long.

I agree he’s not good at comedy. but comedy is full of not good comedians who garner tons of success. Being upset about it is pointless.

& this fucker TKO'd Cro Cop! GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The whole making shit up that didn't happen is something a lot of comedians seem to do, and maybe Schaub is trying to replicate it without even noticing. Theo Von, Bobby Lee, Callen, even Joey Diaz do that. Seems a more common style among the LA comedy crowd. If the person doing it is being funny or he's a legit eccentric guy like Joey Diaz telling these farfetched stories, you don't mind it and just accept it. But when the story is obviously fake and the retelling of it is not funny it can be quite cringey.
