It's one of the best movies ever made. Should've aged itself by now, but it hasn't.

Soundtrack: Super Duper Perfect

One of my favorite movies ever! Amazing cinematography, writing, acting, and a haunting score. They really don’t make movies like this any more.
 
One of the most overrated movies ever.

About 20 years ago it had a resurgence of popularity when it was released on DVD, and I never bought the hype.

Some, surprisingly, in the illegal drug trade viewed Tony Montana as an inspirational figure with his materialistic success.

It really shows how stupid some people can't see Scarface is a cautionary tale with no heroes, and Tony Montana just happens to be the least horrible main character.... who "always keeps his word" and doesn't kill kids... but murders his best friend for fucking his sister.

I could give a more detailed breakdown of the character with 10 horrible points to him for supposedly 1 virtuous point, but lets just say the whole 'drug kingpin with a heart of gold' reputation he has is not earned.

No strong opinion on it, either way.

Definitely does not belong in the same conversation as The Godfather and Goodfellas etc which I often see.

Do you have a top 5 gangster or mafia list? Or i guess other films you'd put over Scarface, minus the Godfathers and Goodfellas?

All films, too many to mention.

In the crime/gangster genre, too many to mention, but a few off the top my head..... Miller's Crossing, Pulp Fiction, Donnie Brasco, A History of Violence, City of God, Snatch, The Usual Suspects, The Long Good Friday, Gommorah, The Untouchables, Dead Man's Shoes.

That's just a dumb interpretation made by dumb people, though. Much like those who thought "Goodfellas" romanticized mob life, despite everyone in the movie getting murdered or sent to prison. They're both cautionary tales about greedy maniacs spreading their wings too far and getting clipped. You can't stop people from seeing what they want to see, but the intention of Scarface was not to prop up the character of Tony Montana in any positive light.
 
8/10 for me. While it's not on the same level as classics like Godfather or Goodfellas, it's great fun to watch. This is Pacino with the knobs turned up to 11; he chews so much scenery it's a miracle the entire set doesn't collapse. The music is great and the lines are endlessly quotable

"I kill a Communist for fun, but for a Green Card I'm gonna carve him up real good".

"I only got two things in this world: my balls and my word. And I don't break em for no one".

"I told you, "no fuckin' kids!", no, but you wouldn't listen! Why, you stupid fuck? LOOK AT YOU NOW!"

"Every dog has it's day".

"First, in this country, you get the Money. Then, when you got the Money, you get the Power. When you get the Power...then you get the Woman".

I liked it but it's a bit overrated IMO. I guess moreso I got annoyed with every high schooler, college age dude, rapper, and wanna be tough guy having to put Scarface posters up in their room/house/dorm.

Tony said he was always loyal to Frank before he kills him but he wasn't

First time Tony meets Frank he wants his gf and then he calls Frank soft. Tony then continues to pursue Franks gf openly to the point Frank tells him to stop. This was right after Tony went behind Franks back and did a different deal with Sosa.

Tony was never loyal to Frank. He used Frank.

Tony then gets caught. Charges up the wazoo. Sosa can take care of it all he just needs Tony to kill the guy snitching on the operation. Tony throws it all away because he doesn't want a kid and woman to die. He's not the one killing them he's just driving. So Tony instead kills him and creates a war with Sosa which is ultimately his downfall.

He wasn't loyal to Frank
He didn’t listen to Sosa

Frank was right about Tony
Tony is a chazzer
A pig that doesn't fly straight
Because he wants more than he needs

Tony is a terrible brother
Tony is a terrible friend
Manny should have been straight with Tony from the get go though and not marry his sister behind his back

In the end he got what he deserved

I do think Tony throwing away his entire empire over not driving the car close enough to kill the man and his family was a dumb way to throw it all away. Tony is a killer, drug dealer, and he would rather face jail and beef with a bigger kingpin in Sosa over a woman and kid. Idk man that's really dumb. I still like the movie a lot but what a dumb way to go out.

The soundtrack is still one of the best of the 80s.

Tony's thing with kids is established earlier in the movie. He says he likes kids It's not like it comes out of nowhere. I already explained this to you like 3 years ago. I don't see it as a flaw. It's a character trait that the film made use of.

Plus he's all coked up and was already fairly delusional and lacking inhibitions before that. So it's not outside the bounds of the story that he would assume he could take on Sosa.

Are you implying Tony is a peedofile? Ah that does make sense since he threw away his empire and his only chance to not go to prison, all for a kid. So you think Tony was sexually attracted to this kid and he no longer wanted to have sex with his sister? That's what you're telling me?

Man I need to pay attention more.
 
It’s one of my favourite movies. I didn’t see it until I was 19 years old, in my second year of undergrad but I instantly fell in love. I’ve watched it probably 30+ times.
