Dude, in what way was it twice as bad?

That's what continued to frustrate me about the media. Hurricane Irma's open ocean Cat 5 wind speeds were legit... not unparalleled but on par with Wilma.

Nothing else about it was that remarkable, especially once it started pinging itself off Cuba and getting bogged down.

They kept hyping up how the storm was as big as the state of Florida etc... seriously, Hurricanes are always massive... 300-400 miles in width.

Older shittier uglier graphics sure... but Andrew was similarly massive.

Want to see a truly massive hurricane, find an image of Hurricane Sandy.

Media got me rustled AF.

Honestly... Harvey flooded Houston, due to stalling, not moving and dumping an ungodly amount of rain, then when Irma appeared it was like the end of the world right away, so the news just cycled stories for 5 straight days... literally running giant headlines like "Dooms Day looms in Florida" etc.

Then people went apeshit with satellite graphics of a Hurricane with high wind speeds yes, but average in size, basically everyone seemed to learn how big hurricanes were and lost their shit as if it were a ONCE IN EVER event.

And then at the same time they start peddling Jose... which spun off into oblivion (or did it?) and Katia which was tropical storm ffs.

I dunno, Maybe I need to turn off my phone notifications...

It's good to know that having all my friends in the islands forced to stay at our house because theirs got destroyed, with another storm coming, is a nothing story hyped up by the media. But hey, Florida survived with 'only' dozens dead and several million without power still, so I guess it's the media's fault that people care.

Anyway, it's not a nothing story, obviously... it's just how the media covers it sensationally that irks me. That's me being petty.

That and the overall lack of perspective among your twitter population that goes apeshit over an Atlantic Hurricane, attributes a Mexican earthquake to global warning and completely ignores a flood in Mumbai that was far worse than both.

We have a house in St. Thomas. That's not 3rd world. It's US soil and far more developed than islands like Barbuda. Like Florida, they got besmirched in the 90's (by Marilyn in '95) and started to build stronger to be able to survive big storms. It still got completely devastated because this was the worst storm to ever hit the area.

What happened in India was beyond horrible. This was still the worst storm to ever hit the Leewards all the way to the VI and even parts of Cuba. There is no way to 'overhype' or 'sensationalize' it. It was devastating. If your complaint is that Americans don't care about tragedies in other places (and that's a legitimate gripe imo), just understand that pretending that what happened/is happening in the Caribbean is part of a normal hurricane season is doing exactly the same thing. It wasn't normal. Nothing about it was average.

As for Twitter, that's just one of the many reasons I've never had twitter, facebook, myspace, instagram, etc.. But this was not media hype. I'm just glad Florida is part of the richest country in the world and upped it's building codes after Andrew. If it weren't, we'd be talking about a much, much higher death toll.

Well certainly not your year in St Thomas. Honestly for the most part there wasn't a lot of coverage in St Thomas... Barduba grabbed headlines for it's 90% destroyed bit but St Thomas seemed to be mostly glossed over. Tons of focus on Miami, and then it took a unexpected turn south hit Cuba at full steam (any news out of Cuba?) before plowing into southwest Florida severely weakened.

And yea, BVI is an awesome place but I'd have to think devastating hurricanes are just a reality... maybe not every decade but you're probably not escaping 25 years without a couple terrifying close calls and another crushing blow.

Loss of life relatively minimal, most people got out or got to a safe shelter? Not sure how anything went down there since the news covered next to none of it.
 
Apparently the MGM Grand decided to refund a bunch of money on the fight, one guy bet 500k on GGG and they refunded him in chips after the decision.

Idk much about sports betting, but that seems pretty legit to refund all that money.

The BVI, like most British Islands, is far less developed and unfortunately the British government doesn't really give a shit about them. Thankfully in the USVI, emergency supplies started pouring in as soon as possible. In the BVI, where damage was pretty much as horrible as the USVI, there has been some violence in the wake as people fought over things like drinkable water. None of that has happened in the USVI according to our friends. Life loss between the BVI and USVI was thankfully kept to the double digits. But well more than half the people are homeless or living under makeshift/patched up roofs right now. With Maria headed straight for the islands and gearing up towards Cat 4 conditions, I can't even imagine how terrified the people are.
 
Am I the only one who thinks this Amazon commercial where the Asian family dresses up their dog like a lion is really creepy?
