i tried to go to St Petersburg while living in germany, but got swiftly no-go'd due to a State Dept travel advisory warning or some shit. Granted you could theoretically risk it and just go, but i wasn't about that life and did all the proper paperwork being in the military

same happened w/ Istanbul, and Marrakesh.

we had this native american cat in my unit in Germany, that was severely alcoholic. He had the shakes all day at work despite sneaking away to sip. He had been getting it sent/snuck in the mail in Afghanistan so he didn't go through withdrawals out there...Then he got caught when we got back, they checked his house and realized how big of a deal it was I guess and they forced him into the barracks (essentially on suicide watch, but unstated). His door had to be open at all times, but his wife was allowed to visit and was sneaking it to him. Dude's trick was to just hide it and drink it in the shower haha. I actually respected the dedication, and he was a good dude just had a serious problem.

Like my dad drinks alot, but not to that level. Apparently his dad was worse, died of liver cirrhosis, but i was like 2 so i didn't remember him at all. You hear stories about severe addiction, and i had seen many a tweaker out here in my youth but i had never seen a full blown alcoholic until then. Gotta admit it changed my opinion on the matter a bit, actually felt a bit of sympathy for once in my life

The vodka Faust is talking about is probably less than $15 for a 1.75L

When I was getting blackout drunk everyday off cheap liquor, my go to was Albertsons vodka in a plastic bottle, $9.99 for a 1.75, and if there was no Albertsons around, it was Popov or Mr. Boston's for $13

St. Petersberg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I need to hit that place soon.

i've been dying to go to the Peterhoff and Winter Palaces

I did get a chance to go to Versailles, but the other two look ridiculous as well

THe last time I was involved in buying cheap vodka was a road trip to the US for a track and field meet. The bottle cost $6. I don't know how much Kamtchaka goes fro now but back in the day it was the cheapest bottle of Vodka I'd ever seen (which isn't saying much since I rarely drink alcohol) .

I used to stay at the hotel outside the gates of Versailles gardens. It's a westin hotel that was previously the Marie Antoinette's apartment(s). It's called the Trianon Palace.

Correction ... apparently not a Westin hotel anymore. A Waldorf Astoria hotel now.
