Always thought it meant "will always respect"... but i'm no groundhog expert, so what do i know...
 
it probably came from boxing.

as mentioned, the Marvelous one rocked it in the 80s and then Hopkins did it in 2001:

It was born as a recursive acronym for War Andre Roberts (a UFC HW legend), and then people began to use it for the fighters they liked.

My first sherdog account was “war me”. It was already a thing when I came around as a TUF noob circa 2005. I never questioned the origin. I just accepted it as a way of showing your support for a fighter, and I still do it.
 
The only war I recognize is the war of Northern aggression.
