How do they differ mechanically? Do they often face each other in the ring? Did Sanda develop in a similiar way to Kyokushin - take parts of Muay Thai and adjust for full contact kung fu?
Sanda and san shou are the same thing correct? Id like to see an MMA match up between a sanda fighter and a MT fighter. The open rule set would really clear the way for some awesome exchanges I bet.
Cung Le vs Wanderlei kinda counts but they were both far removed from MT and san shou.
Well there is a youtube channel dedicated to praising chinese sanda fighters and trashing muay thai fighters. I'm sure you'll find something interesting

I was hoping Zhang Kaiyin would've fought more he seemed decent with good powerYeah, Sanda and Kyokushin fans bashing Muay Thai used to be a big thing in YouTube like 7-8 years ago. I remember Kyokushin fans saying Kyokushin is better than muay thai because Andy Hug beat Changpeuk under knockdown karate rule. Same with muay Thai being inferior to Sanda because Thai fighters often got outpointed under Sanda rule. Interesting to see that now Sanda is no longer that prominent and kickboxing is all the rage in China. (With fighters with muay Thai base like Qiu Jianliang being a superstar).
Tribal mentality seems to have died down a lot really in both kickboxing and MMA world. We used to have a poster dedicated to keep track of wins of all fighters with karate base to show the superiority of karate, and the same with Sanda. But now they are all gone.
I used to get really hype for muay Thai Vs other style match up, but now could care less if Singdam got spinning back kicked to oblivion.
Yeah it seems like sanda/San shou was big right around the time that shootboxing was big. Which was probably like 2000-2010. I remember a lot of fighters (including MMA fighters) would compete in sanda and shootboxing seemingly bc it was just another platform to compete under.Yeah, Sanda and Kyokushin fans bashing Muay Thai used to be a big thing in YouTube like 7-8 years ago. Pretty sure Buakaw TKO'd Toby ImadaYeah it seems like sanda/San shou was big right around the time that shootboxing was big. Which was probably like 2000-2010. I can recall seeing guys like Carlos Condit, Toby Imada, Mark Hominick, and others competing in shootboxing. In fact I remember Toby Imada defeating Buakaw under shootboxing rules by winning on throws/takedowns. And I can recall Chris Leben, Jason Van Flue, and a few other guys competing in sanda/San shou.
You're right. It was Andy Souwer that I was thinking of. He beat Toby in the rematch but Toby managed to win the first bout.Pretty sure Buakaw TKO'd Toby Imada
due to being injured in his fight before against Bovy some of the throws and dumps Bovy used screwed up his back. You're right. It was Andy Souwer that I was thinking of. He beat Toby in the rematch but Toby managed to win the first bout.
Shooto teamed up with them alot so there was fighters like Mamoru Yamaguchi, Rumina Sato, and Mitsuhiro Ishida fighting on their cards too along with fighters from other MMA orgs like Wicky Akiyo & DJ.Taiki.Yeah it seems like sanda/San shou was big right around the time that shootboxing was big. Sanda, also known as Chinese boxing, is a hybrid martial art based on Kung Fu with elements of western boxing and wrestling. Sanda kickboxing comes from military sanda .Kung Fu, Zi Zheng, officially fought against the Nai Yahng vulgo "Tiger of the Highlands" in the Garden of Roses, Bangkok in a wooden ring.
From this fight and that the idea of creating a more efficient martial art used as base the Thai Boxing. What I would later see becomes the SANDA
No one said the idea of sanda did or didn’t come from these matches it may have had influence. the bases are different . Sanda is not Mauy Thai with Shuai Jiao . Remember lei tai matches been going on since Qin Dynasty. Chinese boxing style is similar to Western boxing style, with influences from traditional CMA.From this meeting born the idea of creating a more efficient method of fight. What would later become the SANDA.
