In his day, Al Green (along with his Motown contemporaries) were considered profane. Only upon the arrival of more seditious performers did they find the respect from the mainstream consumers. This happens with every generation- early rap was vilified and criticized until gangsta rap replaced it and then people got nostalgic for the earlier acts. NWA went from a public menace to esteemed elders of the community, while their fans shook their heads at Chief Keef or whatever the hell the kids are listening to now.

You're not supposed to "get it". You're old and no longer the target demographic of new genres. Just because you dont understand what's going on doesnt give you the authority to judge it as inferior to the shit you grew up listening to. I grew up on 90's punk rock and refuse to listen to anything new. But I won't be so dense as to claim its better than what kids are making today.

I saw Cardi B on SNL (I think) & it was embarassing. I understand your comment & there's truth to it, but It's hard to compare her to a band like Nirvana who played instruments, wrote their own music etc. Strip it down to the bare bones & she has no musical talent to speak of. I remember the artists of my youth having some standalone talent. On top of that, isn't she basically a rip-off of another artist (Minaj) who uses the same schtick & is much better at it?

At the same time I know she's no different than Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears & the like. But she's no Sade

My parents didn't care what music I listed to, and I am grateful they exposed me to acts like Santana, War, Fleetwood mac, Peter Gabriel era Genesis, Neil young etc. They were hippies.

I don't buy that just because we're older we're incapable of rational judgement. There's a lot of good music coming out right now, and a lot of crap. Just like any other time period. Just because we're getting old doesn't mean Cardi B has actual talent.

So from what I gather she's about Accumilating Instagram followers and turning herself into a brand like the Kardashian Klan, Although she actually puts out " music " as well. All while tounge in cheek fighting for women's rights, and proving she is not just a stripper. Am I doing it right ?


I don't have any I'll will against her, The music is just vapid shit IMO. She doesn't have a captivating voice like Sade for example and can't sing. So the comparisson makes no sense.


Maybe the comparison should be within the same genre ??

I'm 45, but I have a teenage son. Plus, I've been listening to rap for 40 years. I try to keep up with whatever is new. Same way I do with pop, rock, neo-soul, jazz, etc.

Unfortunately, a lot of it sucks dick. It's funny I was listening to some old stuff that barely made the cut in the 80s that would probably sound like genius now.

FYI: DMX sucks. Always has. He just got a pass because the east coast didnt have a lot of stars at the time.

DMX is dope, loved his delivery, and swagger, he got people amped great training music. sad that he got addicted to crack.

Im mostly a west coast guy, its weird how Rap devolved, its sad too. I dont get how this weird style today came along they just repeat the same words over and over and switch to another sentence over and over over a beat.

what happened to lyricism, you had to drop some dope rhymes that made sense to be considered a legit rapper.

Okay I just listened to that to give it a chance, and it’s fucking wretched. I don’t have to imagine anything, or pretend she’s Lauryn Hill, I don’t care what time period something is from. I love things from way before my day, from my day, and from the modern day. She’s hot, and I like what she said recently about FDR, I wanted to like this. But it’s pure shit. Speaking of which, the first line is her rhyming ‘shit’, with ‘shit’... four times. And her ‘flow’ is just bitchy attitude, with no flow. She sucks.

i tried picturing Lauryn rapping this and i couldn't, because she would have had better lyrics. I could picture Eve doing this though
That being said, that wasn't a bad song.
I like the beat, but i don't like her voice or flow. She just sounds like an amateur hoodrat. But it wasn't terrible. I can understand the appeal, but it's not for me.
