Flying CAS (Close Air Support) is dangerous work, especially when the rebels have MANPADS. The pilot refused to get captured, and went down fighting instead. According to rebel social media, he threw a grenade and opened fire with his pistol before being killed. The group responsible for the shot down is known to have jihadist ideology.

Last time a Russian pilot was killed in Syria, the Turkmen villages were reduced to rubbles within days. Somebody just signed their own death warrant.

A Russian Sukhoi-25 fighter jet has been shot down in a rebel-held area in Syria's north-western province of Idlib. The Russian defence ministry said the pilot had ejected into an area believed to be controlled by the al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham alliance. Although he survived the crash he was killed in a ground fight, Moscow said.

Pilot's last stand against jihadist rebels:

0:03 - "Это вам за пацанов!"/ "This is for my lads!" 0:05 - He detonated grenade.

Zero fucks given here. Fuck Russia. Fuck Syria.

OK, I guess that's two fucks.

Russia should go scorched earth on that whole terrorist controlled territory.

Test out some new equipment.

well it is war, still i hope that those rebels will die slowly and painfully

Jihadists getting their hands on MANPADS is the real news here. Hopefully this is just a case of poor Russian maintenance.

Pilot did the smart thing and didnt let himself be captured, after what Russians have done, i wouldnt expect many of these guys to treat him well.

I wonder about that too. It's either supplied by Turkey or captured from old Syrian Army stockpiles. Realistically, you only have to fly above 10,000 feet to be safe from them. I think Russians got a little complacent and started flying too low in recent months.

I doubt you will find old Syrian MANPADS still in functional state.

I just really, really hope that its just a case of shitty Russian gear and they are claiming shot down to save face.

It's pretty clear in the video the plane was hit by MANPADS.

Not really, the rebels were well equipped the whole time. Rebels are well funded.

what did the Russians do?

I wonder how these moderate rebels got them MANPADS.

Three possibilities

1. Old Syrian Army stockpile, but most would have been past their shelf lives by now

2. US, but Muricans aren't dumb enough to give jihadists MANPADS in case they got into the wrong groups intending to attack the West

3. Turkey, having both the motivation (its proxies getting slapped hard in Idilb) and means, being the most likely suspect

any questions? lol

BTW werent cluster bombs ban?

There has been plenty of effort put into getting old MANPADS to working condition, it is usually the battery that has failed and there has been all kinds of contraptions to get around that.
