I think one thing we can say is a casualty of the invasion of Ukraine is any sort of left-wing government in the Ukrainian state for the foreseeable future. Not only were the left wing parties banned (the Communist Party was banned earlier in 2015) after this war began, a prominent negotiator who went to Belarus was publicly murdered for treason. Many dissidents have been rounded up and jailed, or worse. Control over local media and opposition parties has been firmly established. Ukraine now seems likely to survive this war, and even to do so with no territorial concessions. This result will surely bolster the nationalists.
Do we think that this nationalism will last? And will it be put to good use developing the country and solving its problems, or will we see more of the same corruption and graft, with most of the rebuilding funds going being siphoned away?
