I think the verdict still out. No doubt more weight to hump around. While on paper, a specialized 5.56mm (77 grain) will outperform it at longer ranges, the bullet is still behind in terms of energy. From shorter barrels designed for CQB, the 6.8mm SPC will absolutely stomp on the 5.56mm. Both have their pros and cons. Like the 7.62mm. Seems to be a favorite though:
