Western Ukraine never cared much for the Eastern part of Ukraine anyway. It is populated by roughly 40% Russians. Ukrainians hate Russians and Russian speakers. It has been an ethnic minority not treated well by the Ukrainian government. I don't think Putin ever intended to control all of Ukraine, despite what you may hear. Russia has been fighting in the Donetsk (Donbas) region of Ukraine long before the 2022 invasion. The current Ukrainian Army is a shadow of its former self in 2022. Ukraine will end up losing a good portion of the east.

The only first hand recent footage I've watched in Ukraine over this conflict is Bald and Bankrupt YouTube videos. And he speaks nothing but Russian to Ukrainians in Kiev and in the east. And nobody bats an eyelid at him speaking Russian to them and answer in kind. So I find your statement above somewhat hard to believe. Based on a few videos you ask? I get it.
