The u boats in Swedish waters. The polish refugees. Lech Walesa, the communist party here that more or less change their name the same day the wall went down. I was btw in eastern Berlin the next year and saw the difference between east and west.

The irony of it all is that nothing change with Soviet gone.. Except that the states around the Baltic more or less closed their eyes and dreamed of peace. Russia kept on doing what Soviet did, bulling its neighbors, violating air space, fake attacks and sending people to spy on military exercises. Seeing well trained crew cut guys out on a mushroom hunt was always funny. Oh and at least one case (rumored ) of sabotage. A few years back a telecom mast was blown with precision.

The first real wake up call was the Crimea, then the fake attack with nuke able planes on Sweden. Hit the news in 2017 IIRC but the event was a few years old.
The full invasion, made a lot of people change their tune and was a huge wake up call.
The relationship or lack there of with Russia will never be the same.. at least not in my life time.

I think the root problem was that the Soviet Union was ran by people that only understood power -all power- as a zero sum game.... and then was "replaced" by people that only understand power as a zero sum game. It's simply not in the nature of someone like Vladimir Putin to ever have enough of anything, and as long as the rest of the world exists, he will try to take as much as he can from whoever he can. Russia is controlled by a much much worse, Russian version of Tony Soprano

A)Well LPR and DPR are communists and they are what started this war.

B)Realignement. If for whatever reason we can not topple the US govt the end of the current global order to something less sociopathic is our only hope. Thus partnering with BRICS and other malcontents is entirely natural. The enemy of my enemy is my friend is a pretty standard approach at times like this.

C)They are not further from being communists than the US are. In this country socialism is something stupid people are afraid of. In Russia even people participating in markets view socialism in a more positive light. Putin himself said the fall of the USSR was the greatest tragedy of the 20th century. And one with that point of view of the past is one whose plans for the future the left can get behind as opposition to neoliberal capitalism.

DThe left of my generation feels indebted to Russia because the revealations about the 2016 primary and the subsequent years of gaslighting we received at the hands of normie media were a defining experience for many of us. It has given us a soft spot for the Russian federation that we wouldn't have otherwise had IMHO. It might seem like a random af thing but thats how things played out.

Whether you watch something else or not the American media is poision. Your quality of life will be greatly improved from not watching them.

Once again, if you’ve been living under a rock, Ukrainian officials themselves confirmed there was an agreement reached in March 2022 which Ukraine decided not to follow through, even though Russia agreed to give Donbass back for Ukrainian NATO neutrality.

Instead to shell Avdiivka into Dresden 1945 th by using USSR era artillery they decided to put foots on ground in minefields...at any cost.

In this case overall avdiivka might have been victory from casualty ratio point of view(unlike bahmut) since they actually pulled out, no thanks to command though. Rumour is azov refused order to stay and retreated on their own initiative.

The ammo/missiles/whatever running out was just bs by media back in 22 or 23
