You should update yourself on what Kremlin's propaganda actually says.
The main motif would be the dychotomy of Ukrainian heroes who fought alongside Russians as brothers, and nazi collaborators and their modern day heirs.

It is to this day taught in schools in Russia that from all USSR Ukraine lost second most people in WWII after Russia, and produced second most Heroes of the USSR after Russia.

However, Ukraine was never homogenous, since what we call "Ukraine" are in fact 3 very diffirent regions formed into one republic. Western Ukraine was never happy with becoming part of the USSR, and was always rather different from Russia, culturally and politically. They had lots of people who viewed Hitler as a liberator, at least in the early years of the war. Eastern Ukraine was mostly pro- USSR, and Novorossia (territories which are called DPR and LPR today) was effectively Russia, with everyone speaking Russian and being culturally identical to people from neighbouring Russian provinces.

Bolsheviks were terribly incompetent in the matter of national politics. They made a lot of mistakes we're suffering from till this very day.
Making East and West Ukraine parts of the same republic was a mistake. Probably if they held a vote and let Western Ukraine be independent or join Poland, it would be better for everyone, but alas.

Russians are usually idiots.
Bandera had ideology to declare Ukr independence and statehood.

He had almost 0 impact in central or western ukraine while he had some impact as propagandist in western ukraine and eadstern poland etc areas.

Bandera had advocated to create ukr statehood again and therefore he is worshiped by a lot of ukr ppl.
While he mainly was just propagandist without real power. He had advocated to create terrorists ( anarchists ) cells networks in Poland, therefore had been locked in prison.

When Hitler had get control in area where prison had been located, he released Bandera most likely due his hate vs poles and slovaks...
However this lasted not long time: Bandera attempted to declare Ukr independence while Hitler assumed that Ukraine should be Germany province governed by Germany directly by 100%.
Most likely therefore Hitler had locked Bandera in prison and maybe due to his hate vs poles and slovaks had placed him in more comfortable cell...

Then before end of WW2 Hitler had released Bandera maybe cos he knew how qucikly he will yell about polish problem and slovak problem ....

Unfortunately I had to taste fall of USSR in person and despite kid I had to deal with real life and real life tasks. After this I had to taste nice hot 1990 ies... and after this another trend...then next trend for mainstream public.

One from my grandfathers was white slavic origin russian, orthodox under Moscow archi bishop.
This is in reality part of my real bloodline according to metrics. I do not know ukr language and before this shit had supported old senile Putin more than ukr. Now I had get....real life vs promises during 3+ years.

If about kleptocracy level in soviet union in 1980 ies....and early 1990 ies.

For example one from episodes I had to get experience as kid...IMHO even not as teen yet..

We needed to get some plumbing work done and I knew that they doesn't have normal stuff for plumbing tasks provided.

Therefore I had visited nice warehouse with papers and some 3 or 4 bottles of vodka and and money....in order to get normal spare parts and materials ....for job.

We were taught that the Bolsheviks, and Lenin in particular took a page out of the Colonialist handbook when they were drawing up the boundaries for the USSR. They deliberately drew out some of the borders so that conflicting ethnic groups would be put together into the same country instead of being kept separate, and this was done so that the republic would have a harder time rebelling against the central government since it would have to deal with an internal conflict of its own while trying to rebel.

How much truth is there to that? Did my former prof get things mostly right or did he only get a few pieces and guess at the rest based on Western perceptions of Russian government & culture?

There is at least some merit to that, Bolsheviks were viewing traditional communities as opposition to communism and the new Soviet state, and relied much more on industrial workforce than on peasants and other more traditional social groups. So they took different measures against such traditional communities, at least in some places re-settling and reshaping the population.
To answer your question more precisely I would need to refresh what I know and study colonial methods deeper than I know them now. If I dig up something interesting I will return to you.

Lenin was pro russian oriented.
His political line was to awoid to loss russians blood and still to conquer west and east in order to establish world hegemony sooner or later.

For this purpose Lenin in real life had did damn a lot of trade deals with west...and his word was more worth than paper signed by Stalin. This was real life.
Lenin hated west a lot but still loved russians a lot more than he had hated west...

Therefore he opted for solution to develop USSR industry as much as it was possible and to accumulate real money. He even attempted to introduce cash with real gold and silver coins.

Lenin had assumed that changes in west should do westerners...and pay with their own blood to defeat capitalism and current elite.

While for Stalin his ppl were peace of meat to conquer more lands. Nothing wrong if xxxxxx will die quickly. Lesser ppl walking around, more oxygen to breath. Joseph Stalin after holy imperialistic war vs Finland, winter 1939 th.

While I do not agree with more than 50 % of his ideas, some appeared reality till today.
1. Country is entity created in order to provide elite with income.
2. World does have global economy and there will not be possible to be an isolationist till end.
3. Nationalism is tool used by elite in order to manipulate with working class.
