Roy "Big Country" Nelson

No beard Roy was quite handsome (only face).

Gove him a fake guitar and some auto tune....platinum record selling artist.

Weird fighter - both an over-achiever and an under-achiever.

OA coz look at him and how little he took the sport seriously while competing with and sometimes beating the best in the division.

UA coz if he took it seriously and was in shape, he could've been a proper contender.
He was a BJJ black belt.

what's wild about him and guys with iron chins in general, is he ate some massive power shots off Black Beast, JDS, pretty much everyone. and then a casual ass uppercut from Mark Hunt faceplanted him. same with Mark Hunt, he ate all those Cro Cop high kicks and massive power shots from guys like Le Banner, but little ass Melvin Manhoef slept him with 1 overhand right.

He had really fluid striking and was fun to watch. Great on the ground too.

And I liked his personality I never knew why Dana disliked him so much. He was marketable if they handled it the right way

Manhoef might not be a huge dude but he has that Mike Tyson esque compact stocky build and explosive power.

I mean... he was alright, especially considering the sort of fighter-niche he occupied.

"Casual" uppercut from Hunt? lol no dude, there's no such thing.

That Manhoof fight was the end of an era man and it went unnoticed.

That being said Hunt literally ran i to it and Manhoof had Tyson/Rumble power.

Amazing that by all standards but his own Hunt still had an amazing chin till he retired

If only the guy improved his technical striking, I can't imagine what he could've done. Also using his speed better to close the gaps. He moved so slow because of his weight, he could of been so much quicker with his size and power. If anyone was good enough they could jab him to a decision. After a round of getting outpointed, he couldn't close distance for shit.

I was discussing UFC events/fighters with a co-worker, and Roy as the fighter kicked ass. Personal appearance aside to a fault, he was the definition of "Give me an A or give me an F". Either he knocked his opponent out in highlight reel fashion, or he was too durable, and the fight finished/became boring. Regardless, "Big Country" I still salute you for always giving your all.

I think its easy to delineate his A / F, its not as though its random. He has a losing overall UFC record because he generally lost to ranked fighters. He could murk guys that didn't belong.

Almost as a rule he would get beaten up by top 10 opponents, but beat guys that were un-ranked or near retirement.

Always a fan of Roy <mma4>

Regardless of the disrespect he gets around here Kimbo was a scary dude. A lot of mma fighters were intimidated by him ie Houston Alexander. Big Country’s TUF performance when he casually went out the there & sub’d him with a crucifix was impressive & a great example of ‘levels’ in mma.
Houston signed up to fight him at a catchweight. That's doesnt scream intimidated to me. He legitimately thought he was gonna whoop kimbo's ass

During the IFL days, Ken Shamrock’s Lions were one of the better teams in the league…

A big part of that was because of Roy Nelson.

I always enjoyed watching Nelson get his ass beat.
From the obese body to his shitty haircut, I am glad I don't have to watch
that fat guy show up, just to cash a paycheck.
