only rumor I ever read about the mob involved in some sort of fix was the Moore fight, I forget which book it was, think it was the Nick Tosches book on Sonny Liston. Hardly a pervasive theory, He apparently hung out or met mob figures at different points but according to an SI article, he wasn't ever really involved with them and the mobsters would tell all their underlings not to get him involved in any dirty business.
