Rocky Marciano: 49 - 0

The mob was fixing his fights he was nothing special.

only rumored title fight was the one with Moore and I've only seen one writer who said that. The rest were honest fights unless taking the beatings for both parties was just for kicks. His pre title fights have had questions raised at times. Larry Holmes said something about him fighting his brother and putting it on his record, never heard anything else about it and was glad when Larry lost the one fight that would tie rocky's record and was bitching about it enough to where the judges went against him the next time even though a lot of people thought he won.

Great, great fighter. Emmanuel Steward once said that he wanted "one Rocky Marciano" someone that committed to the sport. And I don't think anyone ever threw more punches than Marciano, Ali maybe but no one else comes close. Regularly over a hundred punches a round, aimed at the head, the body, the arms, the elbows. could take a frightful beating and still win and would never give up until he was dead.

"Every time I'm in that ring, I think back to when I was digging ditches for 20 cents an hour. Nobody's sending me back to that while I still got breath in my body"
- Marciano

Shame he was in a era with no real competition.
Marciano v Frazier would of been all time epic no clue who wins fight but fans would either way

Good points. Rocky averaged around 80 full power punches per round, and as you pointed out, could throw up to 100 in some rounds. To put that in perspective, 60 punches per round is the average for a good Welterweight.

Marciano was fanatical regarding his conditioning. He ran every single day. When not training for a fight, he would run 5 - 6 miles per day. During a training camp - and Rocky would go into the Catskills Mountains for months to prepare - this would rise to 8 miles per day, and then 10 - 12 miles in the week before the fight.

Marciano also did a lot of hill sprints, running to the top of the hill at full speed, then jogging down the hill backwards. Calisthenics were done every day, hundreds of Press-Ups, Pull-Ups, Leg Raises etc. He spent hours hitting a 300lb Heavy Bag, that he'd had made specially.

This brutal training regime meant that Rocky was as dangerous in the 15th round as the 1st.
id also like to add that I expect 60-80 punches from my amateurs in their 2 min rounds and 80-100 in a 3 min round. It takes tremendous courage, grit and stamina to walk into the fire like that over and over, to come forward and push the pace on another boxer. Doing it against someone wearing pro style gloves from that era for 15 rounds is fucking super heroic.

It's been rumored before but there's never been any hard evidence of it. He's the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated. Only two of his fights could be deemed controversial, the first Charles fight and the first La Starza fight, but all fighters have those on their record. He also crushed both in the rematch.

Actually there was something fishy about Walcott's side going into their first side. Something about his gloves being loaded, so let's not squint and only look at what we want to see. There's always sharks in the background doing their thing. Doesn't necessarily mean Rocky had much or anything to do with them, and even if he did, Walcott had crooks on his sise, too. It sucks and I hate that they infes trhe sport. Rocky, he was a helluva fighter.

Rocky Marciano was born 100 years ago today.

On paper, he never should have been Champion, much less one of the greats. Marciano stood only 5'11" tall, and never wieghed more than 85 kilos in any fight. Which is lower than the current Cruiserweigtht limit. He also had one of the shortest wingspans of any Heavyweight Champ. The fact he didn't even start Boxing as a professional until he was 23 should have been the final nail in his coffin.

But Marciano was blessed with ungodly natural power, and his fanatical dedication to conditioning gave him incredible stamina. Marciano not only hit very hard, he hit constantly. His sheer work rate allowed him to overwhelm bigger or more skilled opponents. And Rocky could soak up punishment; he was only knocked down twice in his carrer, in spite of walking through his opponent's shots to land his own in almost every fight.

The Brockton Blockbuster remains the only undefeated Heavyweight Champion.

Do you know old his best opponents were?

Chuck Will tell you

40 year old Louis. 38 year old Walcott . 40 year old Ezzard charles. 45 year old Archie Moore.

Marciano himself said that Walcott was the hardest opponent he ever had. Hell, he was one of only two boxers to knock Rocky down.

Marciano was 28 and Lewis was 38 in their bout. In spite of the age difference, Marciano was actually a slight underdog going into the fight.

At the end of the day, you can only fight the guys that step in the ring with you.

Like wat exactly?

Was supposed to fight Danny Hodge. Would have been a fun fight for two young contenders.

Good point, I forgot about the odds. People forget Louis was on something of a win streak and was undefeated for like 8 fights. He lost to Charles the year before (1950 or 51?) but hadn't lost before that to Max Schmeling in the 30s, almost 20 years before. Yes, Joe was old, but only Rocky made him look...not washed up...but done at the highest level?
