Rocky 5 did not make sense...

You asked, I answered. Once Boxers know a promoter is scummier than usual, word spreads quick. Which is why Don King fell off the radar and nobody would deal with him anymore.
To quote Mike Tyson
“He did more bad to black fighters than any white promoter ever in the history of boxing.”

I checked and I cant believe he is still alive. He turned 90 this summer. Dude has been out of shape for 50 years!

True and my favorite Apollo scene was reading his hate mail. It was like reading YouTube comment sections and yet there was not even an internet back then. Apollo was truly a great character. He had great footwork, the wits about him, understood the business inside and out. Also a great provider for his family. Adonis story bothered me because his explanation meant that Apollo had to be a cheater.

That being said, he has two kids from his actual wife. What happened to them?

I didn't find it that hard to imagine Apollo cheating. When that revelation happened in Creed it made sense, but one of the interesting things about that script was that it really deglamorized all of the characters. Paulie dies leaving a bunch of porno lying around, Apollo needs his butt wiped by his wife because his hands are injured, Rocky has his hair falling out during his chemo, etc.

Apollo having strayed around the time of the Drago fight when he seemed most unsatisfied...it's definitely a flaw we hadn't seen in Apollo but is it really hard to imagine a boxing champ laying the mack down on the side. Rocky wouldn't do that to Adrian but that was an extremely committed and traditional marriage.

Even Rocky got caught looking at the dancing girls for Apollo's entrance.

He can afford the finest medical treatment money can buy. Ripping off that many legends in Boxing made him rich as fuck

At some point movie had Rocky suplex the guy in a street fight, movie redeemed imho
Made me wish we seen some of his previous dumb goon/clandestine fights bum life

Btw best nonsense is rich asshole who surely have good lawyers say "touch me and i sue you"... Rocky throw his biggest uppercut at him in front of 99 people including police, and nothing happen lmao

Rocky's go home line, "Sue me for what?" seemed cool to me as an eight-year-old first watching but man, oh, man thinking about it now, someone should tell him that just cause you don't have a lot of resources doesn't mean you can't get sued...

Truth be told, there were plenty of reasons GWD might not want to initiate a lawsuit against Rocky over one punch. He showed up instigating the fight, arguably subject to some manner of sanctions as a party to the crimes committed given that Tommy left in handcuffs, he has a history of trying to circumvent the boxing commission that could come up in the civil suit, if Rocky's pre-existing injuries were worsened by the fight there's a chance he could be liable with Tommy, he knowingly instigated a fight against a guy with brain damage, he has almost no money to gain from Rocky but if Rocky successfully countersues then he has a lot to lose, etc.

It was one body shot. I'd probably have let it slide if I were Duke.

This is true. Apollo did like the flashy stuff. The dancing girls and all would mean he would want to experience lifes pleasures. Rocky was more of a traditionally man. Not colorful or glamorous in lifestyle or cadence.

Him outliving his wife and brother in law is strange because he took horrific damage and yet is still around. You would think with all the damage, he would have bit the dust but guess not.

True that he can afford designer drugs for longevity but based on what he looks like, he looks the type who eats tons of fatty foods. Doesn't seem like a guy who does yoga or meditation to keep stress low. He made the news few months ago about spazzing out about something. Still acting like a dick.

Reminds me of the real life story of Ken McElroy who was a horrific human being. Got killed in broad daylight and not a single person in town ratted out the shooter despite the town being full of witnesses. This was real life and it was a death of a human being everyone hated. A punch to the Duke is something that no one looks at as a big deal.

Also it was still the 80s, aside from Duke himself, most folks didn't give a shit about lawsuits. Also the whole "Common punk, touch me and all sue" was heard between them. For all the cops knew, it could have been Duke threatening his life.

Nope to all of this.

Theyre pretty disappointing enough to skip.

You didn't like the Mason Dixon movie?

Well I think the smart money was on Rocky to at least outlive the older overweight alcoholic. It's a wonder that Paulie outlived Mickey.

And Rocky...he did do the glamorous stuff in Rocky 3 and 4, especially the opening montage of Rocky 3 and the training for the first Clubber fight...but as Mickey said he "got civilized" and he paid for it. All of that was in Apollo's nature though.

Did they explain his wifes death?

She seemed healthy and grounded enough. She was the first person to pass away. Fuck man, Johnny Lawrence and Rocky have like the most tragic life ever.

Some people are just bequeathed solid genetics. We've seen people with all the money in the world for great healthcare die prematurely and people with scant resources live quite long lives. All things considered taking great care of yourself and having a lot of resources is the best recipe but someone like King who probably only had the latter going for him still could benefit just from having the right combination of whatever non-behavioral things contributes to a long life.

I really like Rocky Balboa by the way. Quite entertaining film, a solid feel-good movie. Tarver's Mason Dixon is easily the least heelish heel in the entire series and that includes pre-face turn Apollo.

I'm pretty sure they referenced cancer, no? But I forget if that was indicated in Balboa or in the first Creed movie.

Cancer. We're all in that crap shoot in her age range at the time.

Just another example of Hollywood demonizing that black man IIRC.

I haven’t seen it in forever but I remember Rocky himself came off as kind of selfish and money hungry as well after Paulie pissed all his money away.

This is true. Some folks do everything right and still not good enough. Some live their lives like bunch of uncaring asshole and they are fine. One thing is, King doesn't seem like a guy who is burdened by stress, guilt or any type of psychological angst. Its like his immorality comes guilt free without a single care in the world.

We all like to thing that bad people are secretly suffering in silence from their bad behavior. But some horrible human beings are built different.

This is true. The older you get the more unpredictable shit becomes. That being said, by the time you are her age, you hope that you already went for your dreams, goals and aspiration. Her age= just live out the rest of your life in humility.

They had the white pass I guess

He practically date-raped Adrian, but you're right... he never stepped out on her.

Rocky 5 doesn't exist but if it did it would be on the list of the worst movies ever made...

i think he just got old and kind of faded away to be honest. As recently as 15 or so years ago when he would’ve been in his mid 70s he still had a huge stable of high profile fighters. I honestly don’t think he was as scummy as his legend suggests. You tell me you have a reputation of being the biggest scumbag promoter in boxing history for 40 years and people are still beating down your door to work with you? A lot of it probably has to do with morons like Mike Tyson finally realizing they signed a bad contract several years down the road.
