Rocky 5 did not make sense...

What's even less likely is #1 boxer on the planet, putting on arguably the GOAT performance against Drago, going broke overnight, having to move to a working class neighborhood, and make just enough as a coach to scrape by.

completely agree. This was the part of it that defied all logic to me. So this guy who would be not only a fan favorite, a household name, a boxing legend, and now an international icon and hero is going to be broke because of bad investments??

Even what-have-you-done-for-me-lately culture isn’t that callous. You’re telling me he wouldn’t be getting serious opportunities to make income from endorsements, public appearances, etc?

Balboa didn't retcon this? I'm pretty sure it did. Balboa is a good movie by the way.

What aspects of the story do you think were retconned?

Rocky lives in a very modest house in Rocky 6. He laughs and says "I don't do that stuff no more" when Adonis asks him to be his trainer.

All things considered, Rocky series has an excellent track record. Only one dud in the bunch in my opinion.

Balboa is pretty awesome and quite tonally similar to the Creed movies which are also damn entertaining.

That scene where Rocky talks to Ventamiglia outside the restaurant is great. Quite well acted by both.
The only gripe I have with Rokys arc is how he went from a punch drunk brawler to a sage dispensing great advice. Lol.

Rocky was having really bad issues with his health and memory. He wasn't having those in Balboa. I could be wrong. I know he was living modestly but it seems as if they decided to pick and choose what to carry over? It's been a while since I've seen both, honestly.

Rocky III is still the best Rocky by the way. I just felt like I needed to say that, lol.

Theres just a big dip on quality after Rocky 4. Like someone said stick to rocky 1 - 4 and ignore the rest.

Balboa was ok, the creed movies were decent. But none of them captured the magic of the first 4. I just can't look at them all as the same series.

Actually rocky 3 was a little dip in quality too but it still carried the magic of rocky. 5 and everything after did not.

His injuries always heal up over time. He was supposed to retire at the start of Rocky 2 because of the damage to his vision.

It's not so much that things get retconned as they don't get focused on for the sake of making the drama happen. Apollo, for example, was younger than Rocky as originally written, but became older because it opened up new storylines.

Fair enough. Thanks for the info. I love the series. I just haven't watched them in years. I usually catch them in bits in pieces.

Also in Rocky Balboa, the commission’s only dispute with giving him the license is his age.

In the early Rocky movies, he was presented as being one punch away from going blind or getting life-altering CTE.

Even as a teen i couldnt buy that a mutiple time heavyweight champion, beloved person in the community and country , just loses all his money and has to live his pre fame life. Once you are that famous you have to fuck up really really bad to be destitute. Movie sucked every other Rocky movie is good though. V is the ugly abortion child no one should acknowledge.

Rocky V was produced in 1990. It just wouldn't be the 90's if it wasn't depressingly gritty.

I've never heard of Rocky V before. Last time I checked he defeated the Soviet Union and lived happily ever after.

Still haven't seen Rocky Balboa

I like IV as an ending to the franchise. He goes home and relaxes in luxury for the rest of his life.

Same.

I think he was always a pretty insightful character, but was never very good at articulating it. As he opens up to other characters over the series, he becomes better able to communicate and share his thoughts and feelings. He's grown a lot from the fighter and person he was in Rocky I, but he still has the same heart

Tbh I've learned more life lessons from Rocky then just about any other movie franchise or show

And how his brother in law somehow had the authority to sign away power of attorney

Supposedly the back story is Duke gave Rocky genital warts.

Duke is a bit of a shady character, but if they had listened to him they both would have made mad bank on the fight , instead financial genius Rockys plan is “ Na man let’s just try and kill each other right now in the street for free “ no wonder he went broke

The explanation was that his managers screwed him, which, at the time of Don King's ascension, was a very valid criticism of the sport.
