I don't get why people get so defensive and upset when a fight like that is called boring. It is boring lol and has nothing to do with being a casual fan. I've watched the sport for 25 years+ and I found the fight boring. Has nothing to do with grappling or striking, it's just the pace and action in the fight. And it's not just on Khamzat, DDP made it boring too. One guy controlled the entire fight but didn't really do much damage or take risk....and the other guy played defensive and couldn't fight back. It was boring, impressive peformance and a great dispaly of grappling, but boring. I still enjoyed the fight and watching.
I'm only on page 4 of this thread, but this is the most unbiased, logical and reasonable post thus far.
I have also been watching The UFC & MMA since the late 90's, and I completely agree that Khamzat's performance, or rather his "control" of DDP and the fight was phenomenal, but at the same time I think we need to take note of the fact that DDP just sat there in a shell simply trying to "NOT" get caught in anything. Not taking ANYTHING away from Khamzat, as those group of guy's are on a completely different planet when it comes to grappling, but it's also easy to look good against a limp heavy bag lying on the ground. Khamzat threatened the majority of the fight, aside from his useless rabbit-punches in order to "look busy," but didn't capitalize other than one or two crucifixes and still wasn't able to finish the fight - had this been "Trademark Randy Couture," it would have been over on the first crucifix.
I guess I'll give some credit to Dricus Du Plessis for his cardio and durability, as well as not getting caught and submitted. Almost everyone that faces these Eastern Bloc grappler's and gets tied-up, gets finished instantly.
I didn't care who won on this one and knew Khamzat would win regardless, but DDP's performance was genuinely embarrassing, ESPECIALLY in Round 5; you knew you were going to lose anyways, so you better go-for-broke, throw caution to the wind and see if you can score a last minute knockout, etc. It was either lose by decision or lose by submission, and at that point you have NOTHING TO LOSE!
So, I won't use the word "boring" to describe the fight as it kept me watching, but I will say it was incredibly frustrating & anticlimactic. And I will also say this is most definitely NOT the most "dominant performance" in championship history.
