Rob Liefeld's PROPHET Gets a Live-Action Feature Adaptation from Studio 8

Studio 8 is hoping to build the next comic book franchise with Prophet. The studio has acquired the rights to Prophet, a property Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld first introduced in 1992.

In the comics, John Prophet could be described as the anti-Captain America. He's a DNA-enhanced super soldier from the World War II-era who awakens in our time after being put in cryogenic freeze for a future mission. Unfortunately, he was not supposed to wake until years down the road, making Prophet a fish out of water, spending his time in search of a mission that does not exist.

Liefeld, Adrian Askarieh, and Brooklyn Weaver will produce the film, with John Hyde and Terissa Kelton also involved. John Graham and Guy Danella are overseeing for Studio 8.

Liefeld introduced Prophet in the pages of his Image Comics series Youngblood, before spinning him off for his own series in 1993. The creator notes he admired how Marvel Comics series such as Fantastic Four introduced classic characters like Black Panther and Silver Surfer that would go on to have lives of their own. He sought to emulate that formula by testing out possible breakout characters in his own Youngblood pages. (He'd done the same earlier while working on Marvel's New Mutants, the birthplace of Cable and Deadpool.)

Prophet comics continue to be published after a 2012 relaunch that saw the character flung into the far future, but Liefeld says the Studio 8 team is interested in beginning with its '90s-era roots.

"It makes sense that it's a destination that we can arrive at if we are successful," he tells Heat Vision.

Liefeld also notes it won't be a direct adaptation of any one story, just as none of the Deadpool movies reflect a specific comics plotline.

"We're taking the best of Prophet to create the best cinematic version of Prophet that we can," says Liefeld. "He's very pure in his motives to help out his family and ends up becoming something completely different."

Liefeld says that Prophet is one of the characters fans have hounded him the most about when it comes to adaptations. He chose Studio 8 after having meetings over the past several years with parties interested in adapting him for film and TV. Nothing felt right until he heard Studio 8's take.

"They did their homework, and not only did they do homework, they are true fans," says Liefeld.

In addition to Deadpool and Cable, other Liefeld creations who recently hit the big screen include Domino, who was introduced in this summer's Deadpool 2. His superteam X-Force was teased in the movie, and are poised for their own big screen adventure in a film from director Drew Goddard and set to star Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Josh Brolin (Cable). Liefeld also inked a deal with Netflix in March for his Extreme Universe characters, with the goal for the streaming service to create its own shared universe.

Studio 8 has Alpha (Aug. 17) and White Boy Rick (Sept. 14) out later this year.

Rob Liefeld? Is it a movie about ballet dancers?

That seemed like a lot of fancy talk when they could've just said that since dead pool is such a breakout success, we decided to try it again with a similar character.

lol.. They gotta play the game though. I ain't mad at them. Entertain me & we're straight.

Sounds A LOT Captain America and Winter Soldier.

I wonder it the characters will be horribly disfigured like all of Robs art.

The Kardashian of the comic world. Rich, successful and totally bereft of fundamentals.

Exactly. I can just imagine the elevator pitch for this...

"He's like Captain America, but EXTREME! brought to you by the creator of the hit Deadpool franchise!"

I have heard good things about the reboot but no idea about the original series.

His art might be shit and him completely unable to stick to a schedule, but he's got some great characters to his name.

Oh yeah, no doubt. The guy has achieved a lot. But his art is so bad that I always get a good chuckle. That whole era of comics was absurd, art-wise.

Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Rob Liefeld's PROPHET Live-Action Movie with Extraction Director Sam Hargrave on Board

Jake Gyllenhaal and Extraction filmmaker Sam Hargrave are teaming up for Studio 8’s Prophet, a period comic book adaptation.

Gyllenhaal will star as John Prophet, a man conscripted by Germans near the end of World War II and subjected to scientific experiments that gave him superhuman strength. Hargrave will direct the film, which is based on Rob Liefeld’s comic books. Marc Guggenheim, the scribe known for his work on The CW’s Arrowverse TV shows, is penning the script.

In the film, John Prophet volunteers for a German experiment near the end of World War II in order to feed his family. After a bombing buries him alive and traps him underground for 20 years, he reawakens in 1965, where things are not great for Prophet. The world has moved on without him, his daughter resents him, and KGB agents are after him to create super-soldiers from his blood.

Gyllenhaal has experience in the comic book space, having played the villain Mysterio in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. He recently unveiled the Netflix thriller The Guilty, and is an Oscar-nominated actor for 2005’s Brokeback Mountain.

Hargrave came up in the world of stunts, working on Marvel Studio’s films from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Avengers: Endgame. He jumped to directing last year with Chris Hemsworth’s inventive action film Extraction, which was a major hit for Netflix and instantly made Hargrave an in-demand filmmaker. The streaming service quickly greenlit a sequel, which Hargrave is directing.

Liefeld introduced Prophet in the pages of the Image Comics series Youngblood before the character headlined his own title in 1993. He could be described as the anti-Captain America — a DNA-enhanced super-soldier from the World War II era who awakens in our time after being put in cryogenic freeze for a future mission. Unfortunately, he was not supposed to wake until years down the road, making Prophet a fish out of water, spending his time in search of a mission that does not exist.

Studio 8, which Robinov launched in 2014, is currently in production on Hypnotic, starring Ben Affleck and directed by Robert Rodriguez. The studio is also developing Nosferatu, financed by Focus and New Regency, as well as the Sony comedy Adulting. In the comic book space, Studio 8 is adapting Black, from publisher Black Mask Studios and acquired by Warner Bros.

I never read the original run, but the Prophet comic reboot was amazing sci-fi. I think it was only very, very loosely based on Leifeld's story. Highly recommend.

Its a shame they're telling Leifeld's version.
