Protests broke out overnight on the streets of Ferguson, Mo., with vehicles and businesses damaged and looting reported, following the police shooting of Michael Brown, 18.

People could be seen carrying hubcaps out of an auto supply store. A shoe store was also looted, with police swarming into the store's parking lot. A QuikTrip convenience store was overrun, with people grabbing items and running out of the store, glass shattered and items strewn about the sidewalk.

A fire later broke out, destroying the QuikTrip store.

Other witnesses reported seeing people vandalize police cars and kick in windows in the St. Louis suburb.

Police in riot gear stood on the street, trying to keep the situation under control. Police dogs were also brought to the area.

The protests followed a candlelight vigil for Brown, who wasn

Hey, a kid died. That means those shoes belong to everyone now.

^Sure enough people are hawking their...wares...on craigslist as we speak. Yet then wonder why all people can talk about is the fucking looting. Ugh.

I don't get it, didn't the kid attack the cop and try to take his gun?

Typical thug mentality, we do what we want and should have no consequences for our actions.

Anger + group mentality. Ees normal.

County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the shooting occurred after an officer encountered two people

As much as I dislike the police, we wouldn't need them if so many people weren't useless scumbags.

The Ferguson PD said this morning that is what happened.

It's largely unsubstantiated. I'm a St. Louis-area resident and much of the details are still up in the air. Preliminary reports are painting a picture that the young man was pulled over whilst walking home (for unknown reasons) and rushed the cop, forcing him back into his vehicle. After a brief struggle, one shot was fired inside of the squad car. After backing away from the vehicle, Brown was struck at least 3 more times.

Again, it's largely unconfirmed. But the looting is fucking inexcusable and, to my understanding, has been vehemently condemned by the family.

Social, economic issues. It's just a really bad spiral. You can keep killing bad guys, but for every one you kill. 10 potential new ones are born into the dirt.

There's enough white collar crime and legitimate civil disputes too. Decent people would never get by without a justice system.

I live just about 5 minutes from that area and have friends that live in Ferguson and went to a community college near there. I can't say I'm not entirely shocked to be honest.

Just a bunch of poor people looking for an excuse to steal

I cross the river from Edwardsville, but my girlfriend lives in Tower Grove, which I don't believe is particularly dangerous. Nonetheless, I've been urging her to purchase a firearm for home protection for some time.

It's instances such as these which could serve to highlight the merit of strengthening safety nets and elevating the lower class....but, instead, they serve to divide and further alienate the poor.

Not sure if the police shooting was justified as more information is needed but deadly force should be legal for looting.

Also, to clarify, this isn't clearly divided between white and black. While I cannot speak to the ethnic identities of the looters, there have been a great deal of white protesters taking part in the picketing/demonstrations opposing police violence

By the police? No. By the property owners? Yes.
