Update 10/30/13
Update time! Man I freaking love this thing!
So here we are, another day, another review!
This time I will be reviewing and covering my newly acquired and tested Ring to cage uppercut Wallmount "Bag"
http://www.ringtocage.com/wall-mount-uppercut-bag/
At some of my old gyms we had uppercut bags and I really loved the IDEA of them but they were often too hard or too freaking stiff, It was literally like punching wood with a leather shell on it. But the principle of the wallmount i fell in love with. If you havent worked out with one, they are very fun and coupled with the other bags in your gym, the double end, the heavy, the speed, I feel this is yet another bag/tool everyone should be added to the arsenal.
So I looked around various websites to see if they made a not so stiff wallmount bag. So after making some calls and asking a TON of questions it came down to the Ring to cage and the twins wallmount. It came down to a few factors, one every ring to cage item i had i thoroughly enjoyed. 2, I had zero Twins experience, and 3 the labor day sale kicked off giving me free shipping as well as 20% off the R2C bag, so that was what finally made me pull the trigger.
The Specs:
40 lb wallmounted bag
4 heavy duty metal mounts to mount the bag on the wall
23” High x 16” Wide x 15” Thick
4 extra padded latex green targets
Black leather shell
Latex padded Inner shell
The Setup:
I was SUPER stoked getting this thing in, I honestly didnt know what to expect. So i ripped apart the package. I goto touch the bag and it was like more padded than I thought it would be! In fact my finger couldnt bottom out the padding to the actual mount itself. I also saw the R2C Gel Mexican gloves (different review hopefully before the weekend) The bag itself weighs in at 40 lbs so nothing too serious.
This is what I recommend:
Cordless power drill
Studfinder
Measuring tape
2x4s cut to the length of your seperated studs
8 Heavy duty long wood screws I used 3 inch for mounting the 2x4s into the studs
4 1 1/4 inch screws to mount the bag to the 2x4s
4 recessed washers for the wood screws mounted from the bag to the 2x4s
Estimated time 15-30 min
Ok what needs to change here is, instead of 4 screws to the 2x4s it needs to change to 4 bolts with 8 washers, and 4 nuts. The reason is after a while the screws from hitting the bag would slip back out of the hole due to vibration. The threads would back up and unscrew. To fix this issue you simply demount the bag, unscrew only the 4 screws put 1 bolt with 1 washer on the one side, then on the other side you place a washer and a nut. The bag will definitely not move or vibrate nearly as much! Much better, way more solid!
Mohsin provided some HUGE screws they may be used for concrete maybe? I wasnt sure and they looked way too big so I used the set up above.
I used my stud finder and sadly my studs were too far apart to mount the bag directly on the sheet rock. So marked the stud location with a pencil. Took a measurement with a standard measuring tape, cut the wood to length so I cut up some 2x4s about at an 18 inch spread to the bag to create the seperation i needed. I mounted the bag to the 2x4s, then mounted that onto the wall and drilling it into the studs. Very easy, very painless, I managed to do it all by myself. Took me about 15 min with the use of power tools.
The Review:
The feel: I put my Winnings on and threw on the timer, Working the bag was fun! The padding on the bag itself was very soft, very plush, the extra padded targets gave you a target to zero in on. There is one on each side of the bag to practice hooks, There is one on the "face" of the target. And the final target is on the underside of the overhang to practice hooks. Very forgiving surface, I also hit the non targeted areas, still really padded even with the stiffest shots i couldnt feel any pain or any weird stiffness on the bag. I swapped gloves from my winnings and put on my Reyes, same thing, no pain, no weird twinges, very awesome! I took the gloves off and went lightly on wraps only and it was padded enough for light workouts which i advise against going wraps only. I was testing it because I dont have hand issues and I wanted to make sure Im not covering this bag under and only my sole point of view but using different gloves and different variables to get the full feel of the bag.
The bag is solid! If you mounted the way I did it will not move! I love the feel of the uppercuts on the wallmount, It is probably the most neglected punch and this bag allows you to throw it freely in combinations. It allows you to work at like a 150 degree angle and get some foot work in while keeping the bag completely stationary.
I found myself setting up a jab to the body alot since this bag had an overhang and allowed me to visualize where the head and lead hand would be.
Ever since ive gotten this bag, its allowed me to practice dips under the overhand and bang to the body or the head targets. It really dials in your uppercuts also, Ive been hitting sparring partners to the solar plexus or the gut because of this bag, and fairly often. I love this bag, the heavy bag is one thing but this thing helps with the power shots and the practicality of it all, it forces you to duck under the overhang to simulate a punch. The padding is great, cant complain.
The Leather: The leather is pretty damn good Its a heavier duty leather, even more so than my Reyes gloves or even my Title Gel heavy bag. Pretty robust design. Rips or tears shouldnt happen on this bag provided you take care of it and dont do anything stupid.
Protection: Very protective! You shouldnt encounter ANY hand issues with this bag even on the Non extra padded targets. Like I said earlier I was setting up the jab to the body alot. The latex padding is soft and very forgiving, I think in the extra padded targets there is even more latex padding.
Padding is holding up! Another thing is one of my sparring partners has some nerve issue on his middle knuckle and the heavy bag flares it up, the uppercut bag doesn't because the padding is much more plush and forgiving. For me it would never replace the heavy bag, but for him its a viable option.
The Price: This retails at $249, but i got it at 20% off with free shipping. It was worth every penny!
Overall: I knew before buying this I loved uppercut bags, so it was something I had experience with. Not to throw any brands under the bus, but this is FAR superior to any uppercut wallmount ive used in the past (Ive used 2 different kinds not to include this one)Its better padded, better designed, robust, doesnt shake/rattle and the non extra padded areas STILL have padding. Some wallmounts on the non targeted areas have like ZERO padding. Honestly there is nothing bad I can say about the bag other than a leather wrinkle under the overhang. This bag allows you to get proper uppercuts in.
I think this is one of those "Specialized" bags that gets overlooked. Along with the Maize bag, this NEEDS to be in your home gym.
Score: A+
