Rickson Gracie vs Rolls Gracie

Confirms what most of us believed and were told but never saw....

Rolls was the man.

people not worrying about belts and no butt scooting...

Agreed. This is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu how it's meant to look. I wonder what Rolls would think if he saw the 50/50, butt flopping, inverted guard, et cetera that is modern BJJ . . .

He can't see it now. He's dead.

I can't know for sure what he would've said and done but I bet he would've thought it was pretty interesting and taken it as a challenge to improve his top game.

However, you should look up the word "if."

It will blow your mind.

The bonus features on this DVD have a like 20 min version of this training session without the subtitles and movie editing. Lots of different people training together. It's pretty worth checking out.

Rolls fights like a spaz. Are they wearing white belts or is the film just fked up?

Cheers for posting this, never knew there was footage of these two rolling.

He isn't fighting like a spaz, he's just putting intense pressure on. You can see the wrestling background in his style. He's always scrambling and is grappling at a really intense level.

IMO this is what BJJ should look like, not this relaxed grip fighting, but scooting, double guard pull nonsense. BJJ now is too slow paced, and casual. Rolls had it figured out.

Wow, despite this footage being over 30 years old, they didn't move all that differently back then. Even the sweeping and going for position seemed to be the same

Like that style the best. The intense pressure breaks a lot of people, even people of otherwise equal skill.

Make no mistake. That was ALL Judo. Done and done. Plenty of points there where he opted for room that a wrestler wouldn't have.

Not trying to be a dick but I've never seen Rolls before and that looks complete judo. Assuming he has fought differently in the past, I won't call him a bred judoka thats just tussled a hella lotta more bjjers.:icon_lol:

Maybe the take downs were judo, but when they were on the ground he absolutely has a wrestling style to his game. He wrestled in the Olympic trials so obviously its a huge part of his game. The way he initiates his scrambles, the way he spins from the top position, i'm not saying Judo isn't a part of his game (its obviously a huge part), but the wrestling is very visible and when on the ground, its very clear.

look at the TD at :28 seconds, the way he goes to the front headlock, but its mostly in the pressure and scrambling.

Yeah, maybe, but all of that was day to day judo. It wouldnt be uncanny for a judoka to make it to the oly trials in wrestling either. Not back then and especiallly in Brazil.

Everything from Rolls in that match ringed of judo. His, if, 'instinctual' wrestling would have locked down quicker.

Not to mention that the judo you see that he DID do, is fricken near impossible to teach an oly wrestler outside of a sambo fighter.lol especially vs a guy he could have jst shot on.lol

Rolls was pure judo unless I see a vid otherwise. Sry, but good for him.:icon_lol:

Fair enuff tho Luke, Judoka/wrestler. edit. sry, nope. No wrestler ever would do a knee-to-belly attempt on td. It will simply never happen.lol

Judoka.
