Rickson Gracie FAQ

My professor, Alexandre Soca, has a 20 or so year old picture on the wall with him as a brown belt, along with Renzo, Rickson, Nino Shembri, Draculino, and some other Jiu Jitsu greats, so I decided to ask him about the legend of Rickson.
He said to me, "At that time, he was unbelievable, man. He was definitely the best."
Then I asked him "Is it true he used to line up black belts and submit them all with same submission?"
He replied "O yea, well first of all his defense was so good, no one was gonna finish him. Then he just played his game and finished everyone."
And Soca is no nonsense, he tells it like it is.

Great story, i love hearing these types of things from no nonsense old school BJJ guys.

I must be the only BJJ practitioner in the world to find all this Rickson worship creepy.

Maybe it's because I don't believe in putting human beings on such high pedastools.

Nothing wrong with that, but when someone has such a pure talent - something you yourself work at every day - you can't help but be in awe. Its that simple.

Hes just a human.. just like you. Yet hes 1000x better than you ever will be. Think of it that way.. heh

Just read all 29 pages. Thanks to DK for all the info finally I am now enlightened by all this "mystique" around Rickson

I believe his work ethic is closely tied to the way he was raised. The Gracies were raised into their Diet, into their mentality, into jiu jitsu.

One of the things in Choke that kind of stands out is one of Rickson's questionable characteristics: his vanity.

It is something ubiquitous to the well known Gracies , particularly his father Helio and his brother Royce. He really changed a lot with time, with age, but it is obvious that he still cares very much for his image and how he is perceived.

Nobody has ever questioned to his face because, well, he's Rickson. The brazilian media is composed of people involved in the JJ or MMA community, all of which are no more than one generation away from a Rickson disciple or the Man himself. In other words: nobody ever questions him because he is unanimously respected and well known. Nobody wants to even upset Rickson : that would literally mean being shunned by most of the Brazilian BJJ community.

I would love to see him give all the answers in this FAQ himself, some day. But the fact of the matter is, you will never see a Brazilian asking him directly and concisely to elaborate on all these issues. Not when they are BJJ black belts themselves, in justified awe of the guy.

Ah, little update on Roger that I got this week:

The last time he was submitted in competition was by a foot lock.... at the blue belt level.

Semi-related note: in the Arte Suave interview with Demian Maia, he flat out says that Rickson is his idol and whom he aspires to. Demian Maia. When a guy like him (or Saulo, who talks about Rickson a lot in seminars and mentioned him in his book) lauds Rickson, no, I don't think it's just "myth"...

seems a little silly to have such a tremendous thread limited to the Sherdog Grappling forum.

Donkey Kong, you should really take all the info in this thread and put it on a "Wiki" page, or a public blog with Search Engine Optimization so others can appreciate it (maybe a Yahoo Answers BLOG). I've read this entire thread several times and it's nothing short of epic, and still getting better. All the other Rickson/Gracie Family info sources that pop up via google seem to pale in comparison to this thread.

Here, here!!!!

I don't know the first thing about code, searches or internet stuff in general.

:P

Recent update:

Seems like Rickson and Kron had something of a falling out recently. Rickson was conspicuously not with Kron at ADCC, who mentioned that his father was "a little too old" and "not knowing how to be father or coach".

Probably temporary, but this seems to clearly be a reflection of the sort of pressure Kron has had to deal with from everyone and how it would affect his relationship with his father.

Wow, I REALLY hope you mean Kron?

It's possible that it could have been another Gracie Train, I guess. It was a cool photo, but I don't remember exactly.

I had the good fortune to meet Professor Luis Heredia this past weekend, and he said he was in that famous Gracie train.

I also received my blue belt from him. Awesome weekend!

I posted this faq in the bjjwiki along with a few Rickson seminars that I have posted before.

Rickson Gracie - Bjjwiki

I gave full credits to Donkey Kong (of course), so I hope you don't mind... Anyone is free to modify there.

That's awesome!

Since my post, I found this youtube video, in which you can see the photo of the train that hangs on the wall of Maui Jiu Jitsu.

YouTube - Luis Heredia Interview at Maui Jiu-Jitsu Academy #1

Luis is one of my favourite BJJ people and I cannot wait to train in Maui again in 2011.
